That's the basic answer. The company ceased to exist as a developer with the release of Wizardry 8 in 2001. It didn't shut down in bankruptcy until 2003.
So there were a few employees left cleaning things up, talking with the community and issuing a final patch. But it was just sad... Everyone knew that Sir-Tech wasn't coming back from the dead and the Wizardry Series was over-and-done with.
You and me both. And I think it was the best of all of them.
I still have my original CD. (Of course, I have my original Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate (all of them), Ice Wind Dale, Morrowind, etc. CDs, too. Mostly because I'm a pack-rat who refuses to throw away a great, if out-dated game.)
But I'll probably buy this off Steam just in case... Even if I don't play it much.
I have the physical copy, too. Spend a small freaking fortune buying it second hand some time back. I kind of want to get it here on Steam, too, just to keep track of how much I play, but it's hard to justify buying a game I already own when there are no achievements or anything as a perk. :(
