DISCLAIMER: I use the GOG version, not the Steam one, so I don't know if the file structure differs between them, or if User Account Control may interfere. If the latter is an issue, I suggust copying your Wizardry 8 folder to another location not under Program Files.
DISCLAIMER 2: Some antiviruses may flag fan patch 1.28 exe as a virus. You may need to add Wiz8_v128.exe to your virus exception list. If you still don't trust it, settle for 1.24 injector method.
--1.28 method--
(I recommend using the 1.28 method to run it, since people reported less crashes compared to 1.24. However, the version of 1.28 bundled with Expanded 1.1 is extremely out of date, so I suggest downloading the most up to date version)
1. Extract the contents of Wizardry 8 Expanded 1.1\Wizardry 8\ to your Wizardry 8 folder, overwrite all files when prompted.
2. Delete the following Glide related files, they will interfere with 1.28:
Glide.dll
Glide2x.dll
Glide3x.dll
nglide_config.exe
nglide_readme.txt
nglideula.txt
3. Delete the following files, they are out-of-date versions of 1.28:
wiz8.ini
Wiz8_v128_eng.exe
Wiz8_v128_rus.exe
4. Go to http://itmax99.000webhostapp.com/Wiz8/ and click the yadi.sk URL next to the most up-to-date version of 1.28 (as of this post, it's Build 5608). It should take you to the Yandex website. Click the Download button and save it your computer.
(Some antiviruses may flag the Yandex website or the Wizardry 8 Fan-Patch 1.28e BETA.7z
file as untrustworthy and prevent you from saving it. You might need to add website exception or temporarily disable your antivirus, though ultimately it's your decision whether to risk it or not)
5. Extract the contents of Wizardry 8 Fan-Patch 1.28e BETA.7z to your Wizardry 8 folder, overwrite all files when prompted.
6. Run Wiz8_v128.exe, select your language. You may need to rerun 3DSetup.
Game should run now by running Wiz8_v128.exe. The main menu should have "v1.2.8 (build [####]) ([Version]) (Date) (powered by CFAgent v4.24 and Lua)" written at the top. You might want to edit wiz8.ini to customize settings to your liking.
If you hate the portraits that come bundled with 1.28, go to the User folder and delete PortraitsSTI.dat and the PORTRAITS folder.
--1.24 Injector method--
1. Extract the contents of Wizardry 8 Expanded 1.1\Wizardry 8\ to your Wizardry 8 folder, overwrite all files when prompted.
2. Extract the contents of Wizardry 8 Expanded 1.1\Launcher\ to your Wizardry 8 folder, overwrite all files when prompted.
3. Right-click W8LaunchWithAgent.bat and select Edit
(Note that this is for Windows 10, I dunno if other versions of Windows lets you edit the file in the same way.)
4. Where it says "C:\Wizardries\W8\Wiz8_v124_nocd.exe", replace the path in the quotations with the file path to your Wiz8.exe. Do this for both quotations. Save and close it when finished.
5. Run W8LaunchWithAgent.bat to launch the game. The main menu should have "v.1.2.4 (powered by CFAgent v4.27 and Lua)" written at the top.
I don't understand what you mean replace the path or how to do that. Honestly I've been trying for hours I just don't understand computer terms at all.
Replace C:\Wizardries\W8\Wiz8_v124_nocd.exe with the path to your Wiz8 executable. For instance, if your game is installed in C:\Games\Wizardry 8\, change it to the following:
so your file path would be:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Wizardry8\Wiz8_v128.exe
remember to put it in there twice as it points to it twice in the .bat
EDIT: If you're using the 1.28 method, you don't need to use W8LaunchWithAgent.bat
I did that and it starts up normally with no changes to the main screen and all the classes and races are exactly the same so doesn't seem to have worked.
Tried that as well and it wont launch if I try that way.
For the record I'm trying the 1.24 injector method.
As for why CFInjector didn't work even though everything was correctly inputted, my only guess is that UAC might be interfering somehow. In this case, copy your Wizardry 8 install to a location not under Program Files, such as C:\Wizardry 8, edit W8LaunchWithAgent.bat accordingly, and see if that works. Even if you try the 1.28 method instead, I'd still advise moving your game outside of Program Files.
