I got into this situation and only made it by equipping a ranged weapon to a character that wasnt even used to it and decreasing the difficulty, and still almost lost against a single slime!
(By the way: I play Ironman, so loading is not an option).
Personally, I'd never play without ranged charactors. In my current (as with all) playthrough , ALL my charactors have ranged weapons, even those with Magic - just in case it runs out.
P.S. Dont forget a good supply of ammo too!
Ah, theres the option to move during combat. That helps a lot and makes combat more tactical.
And yes, ranged combatants are essential in this game.
Thank you very much, you really helped me :)
For example
character 1: all 18 in stats in wizardry 7
character 2: all 15 in stats in wizardry 7
Do they both end up with the same total stats in Wiz 8?
Does karma traslate into anything?
How about spells? You start Wiz 8 with enough XP to make 5th level (I've imported characters before), but do you keep higher level spells (nuclear blast, heal all)?
What if you are a non-spellcaster class but know spells, do you keep those?
Since stat (ability score) increases in 7 are random (Yay my fighter got more Intelligence, again!), if the stats are from the same pool of points (with racial minimums), it would seem that you would be likely to get some crappy characters. Do you get the same totals (i.e. is an imported character one that you could theoretically build from scratch if you placed points a certain way?)
Best case scenario for 7 would be having max in all of your abilitiy scores. I could see that as translating to a score of 55 or 60 across the board in 8, which would make for a really crappy character.
I want to play Wizardry 7 beat it and import the party into 8. If stats work the way I think they do, I will have to remake all the characters in 8, and only keep the gear and cash I imported. Just want to know going into 7 should I build a party planning for 8, or build a party for 7 knowing I will be importing them, replacing them, and scrapping them and keeping their stuff.
I am quite familiar with both games (about 100 hours of play in gold, over 500 in 8), but have only imported parties twice.
I have tried importing from a downloaded savegame, but made the mistake of leveling my party straight away! Boy the Monastry was hard...not impossible, but much harder than I'm used to
If you have the patience, you can gain lots of skill points at level 1-5 just by not gaining levels. The enemies don't ramp up as fast, so you won't gain tons of XP. When you finally apply your level ups, you will be somewhat ahead in many of your skills. You can even auto-battle in a defensive stance and power level stealth, shield, and heal wounds or bless in your first battle. Just be aware that both of these tactics require patience, and in the case of the auto-battle defensive stance you run the risk of being taken down and having to restart.
Finally skill growths are related to your stats (for example high senses makes your close combat improve faster), so if you train skills at lower levels they will generally take longer to increase then they do when your stats are at or near max.
For instance: You will find mostly junk in Arnika if you are under level 6. The higher the better for chest loot. Since this is one of the three starter towns, you will probably not be much higher than 6. (Unless you have an imported party that starts at Martin's bluff.)
Since most of the harder enemies don't really start showing up until level 8, I would not worry about holding back levels at the start. Most people have the hardest time at that point in the game since it is the first time that a new player will experience open combat with medium size mobs. Once you get used to the combat engine and learn the tactics needed to keep your party safe, you will never have to hold back your levels.
Please note that this information is for a 6 man/woman team. You will need to adjust if you are running a smaller group. Then, and only then...would I ever suggest the possibility of holding back levels.
Are there any items you could get from those chests at higher levels that you can't find/buy somewhere else?
As far as loot. There is nothing in the chests that you must have. It is more of a "which method do I wish to use to obtain that item" question. Also, Arnika is not the only place that has level sensor chests. Some of which, do have good quality loot.
My feelings are why buy the Claymore from Antone when I can open a chest in the same town and get it for free?
Or....better yet.....Do I want to sell cheap stuff that I don't want or do I want to sell more expensive stuff that I don't want? (I do not always roll with an alchemist)
So for me, it is more about what I am planning to do with the party that I have decided to play.
Disclaimer: I do not recommend leveling much beyond 6 for Arnika since you would need to be level 21 or greater for some of the really good loot and by that time, you can easily obtain it elsewhere. (even in a small or one person team)
