Wizardry 8
List of Wiz8 mods and utilities
I started this thread to get a complete list of mods that people know about for Wiz8, since a lot of the old mods are scattered over different archives and the newer mods are being maintained on different forums. I'll update this post with information from the replies. Ones with (?) I know nothing about--who made it, where to download it, what it does, etc.

Utilities:

- Cosmic Forge (edit most game parameters, made by Madgod)
- Savegame Editor (unknown author; I have one that changes character stats but not inventory)
- Wiz8fast
- Animation speed files from Wiz8 Simpler and Faster
- 1.26 and 1.28 .exe "fan patches" - 1.26 fixes overflow bugs, while 1.28 adds widescreen support and hotkeys
- Rubble fix script (made by Townltu to fix the bug when Rubble goes to the Umpani firing range)

Mods
- Dodd the Slayer mod (lots of content--new quests, enemies, areas, RPCs, items and spells)
- Christian Coder's mod (class balance changes and new items/spells, no new areas or quests; class changes are not compatible with new .exes )
- Flamestryke mod (adds overpowered (?) equipment)
- Lunastralis? Reforged?
- Wiz8 enhancements (RPGCodex - don't know much about this one, but has some animation speed improvements, I believe)
- Mercenary mod (? recruit 7 RPCs, where do you download this?)
- Nightmare mod (?)
- DFortae mod (?)

Mercenary mod = maybe you meant realized in fan-patch 1.28 thing about 7 mercenarys.

The overpowered profession sets are just the tip of the iceberg in Flamestryke's mod. She pioneered every sort of modification except for new quests and new areas. Most notable are:
  • New items
    • New Recipes for Rangers, Wizardry casters, and Divinity casters.
    • New gadgets to build (some of them overpowered).
    • New instruments (some of them overpowered).
    • Overpowered new profession-specific armor sets.
  • A bit of new story and fixed enemies to embody them.
  • Many new monsters and encounter tables.
  • A Gorrors dungeon.
  • Experiments with new spells, some of which don't quite work.
There are two version of her mod, I recommend Flame's New Mod, which made it to version 1-1. I don't know as much about her first mod.

Other than Wiz8Fast, which mods do you recommend for veteran players?
Are they compatible with Windows 10 or 11?

Thanks!

Nightmare mod = Biogoo's mod.
I have created two mods, both accessible through my patreon page (listed on your discord).

The "Nightmare gauntlet" mod is sort of a challenge scenario, a short but difficult story on somewhat modified maps, with no changes to the game rules (difficulty is set by harder, non-respawning enemies and the limted availability of equipment).

The "Slightly more difficult" mod is a rebalance mod with little to no changes to the game story, but with many changes to the spells, items and enemies. Also comes with an HP and starting skills rebalance if you can get the CF injection to work (system and game version dependant, not necessary to run the mod).

So far, I've tested...mods that work fine in Win10....patch 1.28.....CC's mod....Flamestryke's--which btw 1.1 has an update if you find the site that was restored for her stuff....Wiz8fast...and a save editor--there's two I came across, one of which says you may need to download some file and I couldn't get that to work.....the simple editor Zergs mentions works but, is pretty limited in what it can do. The 1.26 patch mod seems to work fine but, I did not play it longer than just testing creating a party and starting the game.

Also, as a recommendation for a seasoned player....probably Dodd's mod...since it has so much added into the game. I haven't started that one yet myself but, I'd bet it works fine as well.

I've been editing my save games myself, which is not ideal usability for the average player. A tricky part is I don't know how to find character records--It's easy enough to search for the character's nickname and start counting bytes from there for my personal use, but if I were to write, say, a Javascript or Python program for simple editing tasks I'd need a better algorithm. Character records and party inventory aren't stored in the same location in every save game, as far as I can tell.

I've played partway through Biogoo's slightly more difficult mod. I think it is more ambitious than he's letting on, and very well thought out--give it a try!

I strongly recommend grabbing any animation mods you find--for example, I took only the animation files from Wiz8 Simpler and Faster and they work with pretty much any mod. Makes missile combat in particular much, much faster.

Does anyone know if there's a way to play the Mercenary mod? Is the ability to recruit 7 RPCs built-in with the 1.28 exe?

Save file has certain text tags (such as LVLS or TEXT or LGHT), you may use those to navigate a bit. Character records are stored between GSTA (which appears to be the inventory; at least the party gold is stored almost right after there) and GVER (which I assume to be Game Version). In my opinion it's safer to count back from GVER for -CB8A bytes. If I understand it right, every character record (which is 0x1862 bytes long) is zero-terminated by additional 4 bytes and then goes the combat info (0x106 bytes each plus the same 4 bytes of zero-termination).

Thanks, kaymarciy. Those clues ought to get me somewhere to start.
Following up....been playing Dodd's mod. It brings a lot of new stuff into the game. Flamestryke's mod added quite a bit of items but, didn't change game-play much really. Dodd's adds a lot of recipe's for alchemy, engineering, and it's own category....Wizardry combo's.....plus some new....ish....spells, locations, and RPC's. It seems to be working fine....granted I applied all the patches correctly in described order as directions dictate. It's quite incredible mod. It does NOT change character creation / level up like CC's mod does--something I kinda miss with certain builds. I will follow up with some of the other mods when I get into them.

Nice tool, but lacks the fact editor. Is it made by you? If you wish to add it, fact flags are stored after the NPCF tag - the tag, then 4 bytes of total length of the array (in DWORDs), 2 zero bytes and then 1 boolean byte for each fact.

Since we're listing links;
Even though the Wiz Expanded mod has it's own thread, I figured this thread is good for creating a mod collection with links so....Wiz 8 Expanded;

https://www.moddb.com/mods/wizardry-8-expanded/downloads/wizardry-8-expanded-11

Also, some of the ppls that created websites to host links didn't include one of Flamestrke's patch fixes? It's called: Flamestrykes Final Mod version 4d.......which can be found on her restored web page at this link; (click on 'Mod News' in the site list)

http://www.zimlab.com/wizardry/recovered/flamestryke/wizardry8/flamestrykes_w8.html

I maybe made a wrong assumption here but, I installed her 1.1 mod then overwrite with the files from the version 4d. It seems to work correctly but, haven't played it all way through to know for sure.
