How to create and import custom character portraits?
(Gaming Stackexchange Question: https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/364366/how-to-create-and-import-custom-character-portraits-for-wizardry-8 )
As the title says, I'm wondering how to create and import custom character portraits. Additionally I would like to see if there are any available custom portrait packs.

After googling around I've seen a bunch of threads linking to various guides or tools but all of them are dead.

It seems like the information for how to do this may have been lost from the internet as the sites containing the guides and tools are either down or changed now. So how is it done? How do I create a complete animated portrait and import it? What about non-animated?

Did you try:

http://www.zimlab.com/wizardry/recovered/samjack/

there's an editor in there, i didn't download it, but the link leads to a download subroutine, so i'm guessing at least you get something, whether that works i can't say.

It has the portrait editor tool yes, that's one part of the equation. It is however missing the information for how to create portrait files correctly (They need to be a specific format (tga) a specific bit depth, a specific resolution and apparently a specific filesize, I have no idea how to deal with the last one)

Whew I figured it all out, or rather I found a guide by this zombra guy (owner of zimlab I think...) and it taught me roughly half of what I needed, I figured the rest out myself. Wrote my own guide on that stackexchange site I linked to, I'm thinking Ill make a steam guide too while I'm at it.

But of course, why else would anyone want custom portraits? :D

One russian fan made patch 1.28 and utilit for makes portraits.
Some information about that you can find there - http://www.postcount.net/forum/showthread.php?231015-Wizardry-8-Tool-1-0-3-quot-Portrait-Manager-quot

Include "non-animated specification" - you can turn off checkbox "animate" while creating portrait

That's a good find, I might look into that tool :)

I can get large and small pieces to work, but the medium one just breaks itself,it gets grayed out and when selected ingame also has a big white box under it that covers like 1/3 of my screen.I'm just trying to with a static image,no animations

Ok it was my fault,I forgot to ''fit to the desired size'',so that fixed the whiteness, but the medium picture is still grayed out.

You clearly missed a step or two, every step is important, you need to follow all of them, not just half lol. Re-read the guide until you're certain you've followed it completely.
