Simlpe editor(savegame editor). Help plz.
I have problem. When i try to open my *.sav file i recieve message "Error in parsing file. Savegame appears to be corrupted". Win10, steam. But some earlier saves work well(before 9lvl, idk why).
And this "corrupted" saves work well - i can load them and play, but editor think that it corrupted -_-
And i can find nothing in internet. Idk what to do. May be someone have the same problem?

=-=--=-=

I'm having the same issue as KoDu. Any ideas for any tweaks that could eliminate this error popup when trying to use this editor?

I don't know about this simple editor, but you can try the other editor mentioned by Zergs in that other thread.

Thanks, kaymarciy. Since you pointed me to that new editor, I downloaded it so I have it. Don't have a savegame handy to fully check it out, but I don't think you can give or remove items from your characters with it, like you can with the Simple Editor (for instance, in the straight game, you can get one of the good Earthshaker Bombs, but, with the Simple Editor, you can give them an unlimited supply), but, since it's my favorite game that I've played and replayed on and off for years with the Simple Editor and it'll be a bummer if I can never play it again, I'm thinking of starting over again, using the Simple Editor until it starts with that parsing error popup, then using the new editor to beef up any RPCs I pick up after that. There was never a need to edit our money, but I could do that now to give us plenty to keep stocked up on the better ammo and buy more of the various bombs I like to use. It may be do-able like that---gives me a ray of hope, anyway.

What was the original savegame editor that you tried to use? The one linked in the Reddit thread is new, and I have not tried it myself. I just posted it here as a reference for other people on the forum in case they don't follow Wiz8 on Reddit.

Creating a new party does not work for me. Maybe it's only trying to insert to Umpani that fails, but that's all i tried, after the tedium of trying to correct it many times. When i started the game, i could load the saved party, and i got the initial sequence, which i escaped out of, and then just briefly saw the graphics of Bildublu's that tells me i'm entering gigas, then the screen went black briefly then back to desktop. Then i went to check the save in the editor--it had no characters, a large number in 3 of the attributes (of no character) so i started re-populating, got to the inventory screen and found hundreds of daggers and some arrows in the inventory. I deleted all those things, finished creating the party, and when i hit save, the editor closed. I reopened the editor, and it was back to the mess it had made before.

Zergs, the really good savegame editor I've used for many years (until recently, when, at very different points in the game, it started giving me this parsing error popup when I tried to do an edit) is called "Simple Editor for Wizardry 8."

Skleedle, was that the new 2022 editor you were using from Reddit? What a mess! But, the way you wrote it up, your post makes very little sense to me. Were you trying to load your characters from Wiz 7 into the editor above? Apparently, it can do that, but I never played Wiz 7 and would actually recommend starting with a fresh Level 1 party in Wiz 8.
Skleedle Feb 14, 2022 @ 7:19am
yes, the editor in the link above.
i tried the "new" option, selecting "umpani" from the menu, put in characters from the new characters in W8, and edited them to have the same stuff as a party i imported years ago.
Maybe the failure is related to having only 2 members?

Just to clarify any possible misunderstanding here, this new editor apparently can create a new wiz7 party from a scratch to be imported into a different start of wiz8.

Yeah, this gets confusing when we're talkin' about 2 editors in the same thread. If I were you, Skleedle, I would simply start a fresh game of Wiz8, from the beginning, with a full core party of 6 characters of your choice, and use, if necessary, both editors mentioned above to beef them up and give 'em some good items, like I'll be trying to do after I take a break with some other gameplay for a while. Another great thing you can do with the Simple Editor is give each of your spellcasters a Mana Stone with the max possible charges of 255. You only find a few of these in the whole game and I think they all have only 2 charges on them. Make some extras in case you start getting that parsing error popup and can't make any more. I should add that, when you're talking about Wiz8, you're talking about the game that has the best characters I've ever seen in a game, with the best voicing and the best dialogue lines, and the game's so-called "Personality System," one of its stand-out features, makes sure that, in the course of the game, they become near and dear to you.
Zergs Feb 14, 2022 @ 4:24pm
@Sig - the only editor I have is one that's called "Savegame Editor.exe" with a modified date of 12/22/2001. I think it's a standalone exe, and I don't quite remember where I downloaded it. It also does not have item editing functionality. If I want to cheat in an item, I go into Cosmic Forge to make an item creation formula (say Ymmu's Paw = Bullet Stone + Arrow), make the item I want, and then go undo the change in Cosmic Forge.

If you want the editor I use, send me a Steam friend request with your email and I'll send it to you.

Edit - nevermind, found it with a quick Google search:

https://www.zimlab.com/wizardry/recovered/samjack/

I use the second one on this list. The first one has never worked for me.

@Zergs, same here....couldn't get that first one to work for the life of me.

@everyone......If anyone figure's out how to, let us know please. The instructions for downloading a certain file and/or replacing a windows file with an older one....blah...blah....does NOT fix that editor. At least, not in any way I tried. But, I'd like to check it out cuz it's suppose to be pretty functional as a save editor.

Oh, it's a shame you guys could never get the "Simple Editor" to work, cuz that's the one I've always used, until I started getting this new parsing error popup recently, and it's really great. Besides maxing out my party's attributes, skills, and known (but not yet castable) spells at the start of the game, and, later on, when they get into exploring the wilderness areas in earnest, making batches of Mystic Arrows, Medusa Stones, Lightning Bolts, and all the best bombs for them, I also use it to get rid of the personal items that RPCs won't normally part with (like Vi's stupid Stun Mace), and to keep "Party Items" uncluttered---for instance, whenever we get an upgraded Umpani Security Pass, I junk the previous one. I also give them some special items at the start of the game, including Mana Stones for the spellcasters, a full spot of 5 Restoration Potions for everyone, a maxed-out Mark 12 Omnigun for my Gadgeteer that can shoot anything except shurikens, the 5 instruments I want my Bard to have (though she can only play the Bless horn in the beginning), a Doubleshot Sling, a Flame Staff, and a Heal All amulet for my Mage, a Burning Spear for one of my Rangers, Longbows for my Fighter, both Rangers, and my Bard, and Energy Blast amulets for a few of them, just because I like that animation---and all of these that have charges start out with the max of 255. After a number of replays, I found that I prefer to not do the endgame on Ascension Peak, so the game doesn't end---you can just keep policing your favorite areas forever with your high-level party, which, for me, includes the android and Tantris. I also have the Cosmic Forge editor, but I only use that to give some of the bombs different inventory images so I can tell 'em apart, and to allow Tantris to go to some of the areas he won't normally enter, after the main game, when we just keep going around killing respawns. I particularly love the Marten's Bluff fort and moat---sometimes, after reclearing that area, we'll climb up the catapult and wait on the ramparts for a group of creatures to respawn and come around that side of the fort, shooting down at them when they do---fun! I even go into the game's music folder and change the rousing "Main Menu Theme" to the laid-back-sounding "Menu Theme."

Are you talking about the W8edit that needs a file called TABCTL32.OCX? If so all I had to do to make it work a few weeks back was right click for properties and change compatibility tab to RUN AS ADMIN. I was trying out an all Rogue party and wanted to adjust starting equipment to daggers on fairy characters.
