Omnigun won't equip?
I am in Trynton and I just noticed that my Omnigun is in the party inventory and red so my Gadgeteer can't use it. There are no conditions or curses on anybody. Can anyone tell me what happened and how to fix it? I lloaded a save and learned that the Omnigun became unusable right after I leveled up from level 8 to 9. I tried leveling different stats and skills but it didn't help. There must be something here that I am missing.

It might be that you are trying to equip it over something in two hands, like a sword in one hand and shield in the other. If so then equiping it in the other weapon slot might work. If you remove weapons already equiped that might be able to do it.

Otherwise, I have not run into that.

Other possibilities:

The Omnigun seems to be tied to the character, so I do not know what will occur if you choose not to equip it, but only for a while, or if you buy it back after selling it (for 1) to a vendor.

It will also be red if any player other than the Gadgeteer is highlighted.

No, I tried all possibilities. Gun is red for everybody. Stripped Gadgeteer of all but his teeth but gun still won't equip. Guess I could start putting points into bow but he won't be very useful for a long time.

Never ran into that but if you use a skill a lot it will rise fast. Any Ranged Combat Skill you have accumulated will apply directly to your new ranged weapon as well.

Is the engineering skill high enough? I think the requirement increases as the gun improves.

You are right. My engineering is 9 and the gun requires a 10. I didn't even know that the gun improved on its own. I thought I had to merge something with it to improve. Now I have to wait for about 100,000 points to the next level before I can increase my engineering. Anyway thank you Doctor.

Engineering grows by using gadgets. A few shots of your Lightning Rod, Jack-in-the-Box, Duct tape and you should have that missing skill level in minutes.

Thanks, I haven't used the Lightning Rod or Jack-in-the-box because they were so ineffective. How can I use the duct tape? I have tried merging everything. This game always has surprises.

Duct Tape is a complete gadget. Nothing to combine or merge.

The effectivity of the Rod increases when engineering is increased. To be used preferably in uncritical battles.

Early on, I like to have my Gadgeteer use the Rod as his/her first strike in every battle. At least use it or some sort of gadget, once or twice in every battle. That’s the fastest way to level up engineering, that I know of. And you DEFINITELY want engineering up to 70 as fast as possible. That’s one of the best perks of having a Gadgeteer.

P.S.,
If I remember right, a 9th level Gadgeteer probably will not be too impressed with the damage of a Lightning Rod. But that’s not the point. In the first half of the game, training for end level skills, weapons and play style is what is important.
Example, if you decide to run Faerie Ninja, you should stay with the Faerie Stick ( and maybe even dual it with the Shillelah). Even though the damage is almost nothing. Believe me, it can be slow and frustrating... but it WILL pay off.

Or take a bo for an FN, from the Starter Chest. Damage is slightly better. Don't expect wonders: she is quite weak in the early game.
