Ferro doesn't have The Mauler
I'm not sure if its because I'm now using the steam version and not my discs or if it's just how fast I went to it in this game, but he doesn't have it in his inventory...

Is there a mechanic that says it needs so much time before becoming available, like the spellbooks became available after a certain average level?

(and on that note, how do you mod the steam version? Is it very similar to the disc version?)

As for modding, yes. I'm currently using Flamestryke's mod for my current play through.

Sorry I can't help with your other question

Ferro usually has it in the steam version.

The reason could be what you suggest, but the other possibility is if there is lots of ammo in his inventory, clogging it. That is a known game bug... but I never ran into it with Ferro.

If it is hidden by ammo, I tend to buy up all the regular arrows, bullets, and quarrels and dump them in a pile.

Cosmic Forge works just fine, if you find a few DLL's for parts of it. Item and Loot editors work on just CF itself

Vendor inventories have a daily cycle, sometimes the thing you want needs a few hours to get stocked. Also the high-end EQ is level-checked.

Ferro doesnt always sell the mauler, restocking the inventory through resting or spending the time doing stuff might be required.

In my own experience, mauler is available only from a certain level onwards, not before. This is the case for certain items from most vendors.

I suggest to try the next. Before you talk to Ferro, but in front of him, save. Then talk and look for the item you need. If he doesn't have it, reload. Inventory will reshuffle.
Try it up to 20 times. Costs one minute or 2. if he still doesn't have it, your level is too low.

If you talked to Ferro already, spend 3 full camping sessions, then approach him, do not talk, save, talk. See above.

Sleeping close to him won't work, unless you are Templar, but go to the back of his workshop with the elevator. Upstairs in front of his safe, or below in the elevator shaft, you can sleep safely.
If you have X-Ray, use it, otherwise be careful not to disturb Rapax.

Good luck.

BTW: I found (and read it somewhere) that Ferro doesn't sell Lightning Bolts to partie higher than L20. Could be interesting for you just in case.

I can confirm this - just tested it in an extreme case with a level 4 party. Ferro never offered even a simple enchanted longsword.

It is possible that the level required to get an item offered at a vendor, which is not visible in cosmic forge, is in some way connected to the artifact skill required to identify said item, which is visible in cosmic forge. In that case, level 14 could be a requirement for the mauler (84 artifact skill required; artifact skill works in increments of 6, and 6*14=84). This is a pure speculation though, although the idea does whitstand a swift plausibility check (Ferro offers enchanted katanas and gleaming swords to the level 4 party, both requiring artifact skill of 24 to identify, as well as other easier to identify weapons, yet he doesnt offer any weapon that requires more, for example enchanted mace that requires artifact skill of 30).
As a side note, I am not sure how party level is exactly calculated, it is probably a simple average but I cannot say.

The vendors still offer all items marked as "always offer" in cosmic forge, no matter what the party level is.

Unless this is your own experience, I expect the author of this statement simply overfilled Ferros inventory with other stuff. Ferro still has these, they just dont display as the list size is limited. Buying lesser ammo and selling it back in bulk solves this problem. Many players put a portal near Ferro as they cannot afford his more expensive items yet and then sell their stuff to him throughout the game. This can easily lead to overfilling of his inventory list.

Sounds plausible. I will check this theory, should not be too difficult with Antone.

I did not systematically research this topic. I just noticed that my solos never got Lightning Bolts offered, when they did Rapax Castle late in the game, while at early visits they were offered.

I will share it here, when I have more insight.

Another experience with Crock and his L4 spellbooks: I often got offered them only above L12. Thought it was their minimum level. In my last game, they showed up at L10.
Unfortunately Flamestryke's site does not provide identification minimum for spellbooks, so I cannot use this example to check the theory.

The spell level 4 spellbooks from Crock require 66 artifacts each, should be also theoreticaly available from party level 11 onwards. Once again, not sure how this is exactly calculated. There might also be an additonal randomness factor, or perhaps a difficulty setting factor.

EDIT: After numerous attempts I couldnt get Crock to spawn L4 spellbooks on any difficulty (save file loaded on expert but sometimes tried to switch before talking to Crock) with a party consisting of 3 level 10 characters, 3 level 11 characters and 2 level 11 RPCs.
EDIT 2: Immediate success (on expert) with a party consisting of 1 level 11 character, 5 level 12 characters, 1 level 11 RPC and 1 level 12 RPC.

Further proof of this concept. I had a low level saxx in my party. I dismissed him and went back, Ferro had the mauler. So it also probably takes in RPCs level into consideration.

I have the same problem. I've tried buying all arrows \ stones.

My characters are LVL's 14-16.

Am I too high now for the Mauler? I'm currently using Vulcan Hammer which is not as good.

Resting 1 to 3 days doesn't seem to make a difference.

AFAIK, it’s still a random chance, so if you rest 24 hours and save before talking to ferro then reload and check it should eventually show up.

I tried again and again and again. Still nothing.

Finally, I decided to go disable the Arnika Bomb which leveled my VALK, Ninja and Bishop to 15 and my Rogue and Gadgeteer to 17.

One last try at Ferro.
Rested day 1. Still nothing.
Rested day 2. Nothing.
Gave the ingredients to Ferro for the Vampire Chain.
Rested day 3. Bingo! The Mauler was in Ferro's inventory.

I rested 1 day longer to see if the item would appear again in Ferro's inventory. It did!

It would appear that the minimum party requirement for the Mauler is LVL 15.

That’s good to know! Thanks for sharing

I can attest 100% that Ferro stops selling Lighting Bolts after a certain character level. I'm not certain what level that is, but it is definitely true. Even after clearing out the ammo in his sale list, after a certain level I recall no more bolts in the list after many, many attempts.
