Umpani Can't Get Into the Mountains
My guide says to pickpocket Sgt. Kunar to get a key into the room behind him, which is the teleporter. I used a save game editor to give my bard 100 pickpocket skills and I tried multiple times. I always get a few items, then start failing, then he catches me. I used the editor, because when I Googled Sg. Kunar, another guide says to kill him to get the key. I try not to kill vendors who are surrounded by troops, and vendors in general. It doesn't appear there is any way to pickpocket him and get the key to the teleport room.

Looks to me like I'll be leaving the Umpani camp and will instead either go to the Northern Wilderness, or head back to Arnika, then Tryton and try to locate the bluff where I'm supposed to find the arm that will get me the level 3 security pass. Thoughts? Thanks.

I don't completely understand the issue. Are you saying you can't get into the Umpani mountain at all? To do that, you have to join the Umpani and do their tasks. There is a guy to talk to who will recruit you. Doing the Kunar thing usually comes later.

I have a level 1 and a level 2 security pass, but in order to get into the mountain, I'll need to bring the recruiting officer an arm from Marten's Bluff which I believe is south of Tryton, though I haven't located it yet. Completing that quest will give me a level 3 security pass, which will open the elevator leading into the mountain caves.

I can't reach the teleporter to Marten's Bluff, because I have not been able to secure the key to the teleport room from Sgt. Kunar, and I don't believe I'll be able to do so without killing him.

I'm new to the game, and have so far completed the Monestary, Tryton, and the Umpani Camp, along with some adventures on the roads back and forth. As far as I see, my only options now are to head SW through Tryton, and find Marten's Bluff to get the arm and complete the task, or it seems I can forget about it for now and head up to the Northern Wilderness.

The guide I'm using is from Guilersk. I'm also using several others with maps and locations. In the Guilersk guide, the next location to visit is the mountain. I simply cannot get there yet, and I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for me about what area to visit next. Thanks.

Edit: I had all the maps printed for the entire mountain region, and I had read through all the guides for that area. I'm in a bit of shock that I spent a couple hours preparing for a region I can't visit until I complete a couple weeks worth of adventures on the other side of the map in the SW. Wow.

You do not need to get into the mountain in order to get to Martin's Bluff(in fact it won't even help you). The whumphammer in Mt Gigas goes to the locked shack that was on your right after coming out of the monastery (right before you hit greenery).

In order to get to Martin's Bluff you will need to go through the Swamp(southern most exit), which is on the other side of Trynton (Not Trynton Upper, but the lower section). Once you get inside the castle the arm will be on your left; near the barred door next to the catapult. You can also get to the swamp through the northern wilderness to Mountain Wilderness to south eastern wilderness (to swamp) but i do not recommend it.

You can get the key to the teleport room from Kunar with a password. You will learn the password later.

edit: Guilersk's guide doesn't seem to be chronologically ordered. I have no clue why he wrote it the way he did.

My "general path" tends to head to Martin's Bluff first(though getting the flag first from the Umpani is fine too) and then to the Umpani. There is a teleporter hidden in the T'rang base at Martin's Bluff that will give fast access to the Umpani (if you only have one portal the entrance to the T'rang porter is where you set it, as the wires found with the t'rang arm will fix it and let you travel to 4 different locations around the world!)

Ahh. I read that Kunar was a spy and that there was a quest and password, though I didn't read that he would give me the key after I gave him the password. That's good to know.

Is it safe to go straight to the swamp? My guys are level 8-10. I'd like to get that arm and return it so that I stay with the walkthrough sequence.

It's never safe to go to the swamp.

Oh yea it's definitely safe. In general it's always safer to go earlier. Once you get used to nuking everything in sight the swamp is easy forever.

I think that if you get to the swamp around level 7 you only get non-hostile (yellow don't get too close) crocodiles and can run through basically unabated to the bluff.

In the swamp, avoid crocolisks in the open (they are neutral unless you come too close) and above all, an ant queen if you meet one (a big ant surrounded by smaller ant soldiers). It might also be safer to stay south of the river, but if you go north, you might enter the old mines tunnel map, which will help with story progression too (and leads to the Martens bluff as well).
Also, dont miss Crock (a shopkeeper).

The Umpani and T'Rang quests seem designed to make you go back and forth between them when you first play. An early Umpani quest wants something you get from Martin's Bluff and an early T'Rang quest wants something from Mount Gigas. I think the game was designed and most people play double agent and do both quests. At least one NPC actually recommends that if you don't think of it yourself.

I usually go toward the swamp first and then Mount Gigas after. I also save the sounthern and northern areas for later, even though they directly connect.

In the swamp, you can avoid quite a few monsters because the area is so open. Just remember to hug the wall. Also, if you run into any horse like monster, stay away. They also usually run in combat. You really have to disable them the first round to be able to get close to kill them.

Thanks for all the advice. Sounds like the swamp is a complicated place. I'll start making my way back there either today of this weekend. Sure appreciate the info.

Honestly, the swamp isn't bad. There are just a few things to be careful of. If you walk along the edges of the map first, you will find quite a bit of stuff.

Spoiler

There is a spot between some huts and a beach location (lots of stuff on the beach from a crash) where there are some nasties that do psionics. They are guarding an entrance to Bayjin. I stay away from there and skirt around them until my party is stronger and I am ready for them.

But lots to do in the swamp and a vendor named Crock sells a lot of stuff. A lot of people go to the swamp and Martin's Bluff first because there are two merchants in the close area (3 if you count Trynton) versus one at Mt. Gigas.

Theres a looooooot to do in that area and it connects to a lot of other areas too. Id really take your time with the swamp and thoroughly explore all the areas it connects to.

Thanks for the info. I decided to head back there, and pass through Arnika again. Lucky I did, because Miles was back in Arnika where I originally recruited him. I like him better than Sax, the bard. The funny thing was that Miles had lost all the good stuff I had left him with. Guess I learned my lesson. Always take everything from an NPC before you dismiss them from your party or before they leave you.
Slooge Jan 6, 2017 @ 9:45pm
their stuff gets dumped into your shared inventory when they get dismissed, except for items they won't let you take off of them in the first place...you didn't lose anything, unless you sold it by mistake.
ZombieKidzRule! Jan 7, 2017 @ 3:16am
That has been my expience as well. There stuff appears at the top of the party inventory when they leave. However, I usually strip them of everything they will let me anyway, before I dismiss them.

Damn Vi and her affinity for her mace. :)
