Dosbox or X-fi sound configuration options? PC speaker soundfx have gain noise.
I found my soundcard forceware was giving some issues (x-fi card) and cleaned it up. Still a little gain (sounds like anyway) distortion anytime anything but music plays. Am I the only one getting the high pitched crap?

It's the only thing keeping me from pure enjoyment of this olden goldy.

You should probably set sound effects to 'Sound Blaster' in the ingame options. If you're getting little popping noises sometimes that can be caused by having the DOSBox cycles set too high (I use 5000 for W7 and it seems to work fine now). Also the sound prebuffer can effect it too (I have mide at 120 for this). Both settings can be found in the 'dosboxWizardry7.conf' file. It's a plain text file and you can just use notepad to edit it. I found that starting a new game and just sitting through the intro was a good way to test my sound settings as i played with them.

Music is np, and "PC Speaker" is the only sound fx setting that actually plays the correct sound efects. Sound blaster is garbled. I'll try the suggestions you give. The sounds play fine, but even when I turn down all volumes easily controlled they have distortion that sounds similar to line noise given by amplification. Appreciate the suggestions as I haven't tampered with it before, and running w7 through dosbox before steams version ages ago, I didn't encounter this.

Turns out its a lot easier to get the dosbox out of fullscreen and just change the settings while the game is running lol. Turned out I needed the PC speaker setting at sample rate of 49716. Nothing but fun and adventure now.
