Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge

Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge

Grid Cartographer (Mapping Tool)
I hate drawing maps on paper so I made a program to help me instead: Grid Cartographer.

You can download it for both PC and Android here: http://www.davidwaltersdevelopment.com/tools/gridcart/

I'm open to suggestions about how to improve it, and I've released over 40 updates to the PC version so far and I released the Android version only yesterday.

I find this game far more fun and immersive when I don't feel lost all the time, leaving notes for myself to come back to places later. I hope you like it :-)

The program is for replacing the paper, not the fun, like your method.

Then you lose the point. Anybody who creats something with out first checking if the product already comes with the product you are trying to give away is
1) is not that smart
2) Lazy
3) trying to infect my computer with a hostile program.

And the product with out first informing people on this thread that an alternative exist to you app, and thats the catch. It was offered when noone asked for it. And in todays world that makes me very skeptical of the product.

I've been develpoing software for over 20 years and I am sure he did it just for fun and couldn't care less about *if* there where something. You can use the program with this game or any other game of your liking, just because.

Do you really think people playing this game doesn't have played it before , or don't know the trillion sites where you can find maps, etc ?????

Like I said, mapping was (is) part of the fun for most hard core, old fashioned PRG / dungeon crawler players, and using a cheat code or a hints book desn't make you smart, all the contrary.

Map it yourself, find it yourself, be a (grown up) man

@Hidden - where were you 10,15, 20 years ago my friend !

How many maps I started only to find the dungeon run off the grid paper. :(

Would have been handy for a few MUDS too -

Makes me wish I had not, a few years ago, already re-run many of the DOS games I had never seen on a store shelf back in the day.

You, sir, are f**g awesome.

I had one great session using this. Went back to use it a month later, program wouldn't open. Windows would say it was running, but I could not actually get it to show up so I could use it. Windows 7, core i5 laptop

That's pretty strange! Can you go here:

C:\Users\%USER%\AppData\Roaming\David Walters Development\Grid Cartographer\

Then copy the contents of editor-settings.ini and send it to me via the contact page here: http://www.davidwaltersdevelopment.com/contact/

Then move that file somewhere else, end task on GridCart.exe (if running) and see if it works again more than once. That will hopefully give me some leads for investigation. Thanks in advance for helping with this :-)

I played the original and mapped it by hand, So perhpas I see his point, I very much dobt he is trying to infect your computer, is lazy, and uninteligent, I just came to this forum to see if anyone had any way of doing that, as my local store has not graphing paper in 20 years....I will have to check it out. Suspecting someone of foul play with no evidence to support it is weak. Play some Bards Tale 3 get to the final dugeon and map that out yourself. Some games used to piss me off, if you did not map, you would get lost. Seeing a compteded map is a huge spoiler, having a program to help you make one is not.

This is a great tool. Wizardry 6 is the first game of it's type that requires self mapping that I have ever played. Always somehow seemed to miss those games when I was younger. Thanks so much for this program. I spent nearly an hour just mapping the first level/learning how to do so. Thank you for bringing this joy to the computer screen, though I was considering using the graphing paper, this is simpler and saves desk space.

Took me a while to realize you couldn't add notes without paying, but paying is quite a decision, for a most probable result that I won't play games requiring manual mapping. Ha well, ok, that's life.

Yeah, that's a tricky one. I didn't want the free version to make it too obvious what was missing. I find overly nagging programs or those that sort of 'rub it in' pretty annoying (plus it's not supposed to be a limited trial as such anyway). The downside of my approach is if it keeps too quiet you might not even know what you're missing!

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to try the thing though and I hope you enjoy the free edition all the same :-) I hope you enjoy the new features in the upcoming v3 too.

I'm glad I found this, but before I commit to purchase - does it work fully on Windows 8.1? Is the license per computer or fairly open (I intend to put it on my Surface Pro 3, but if that doesn't work out I want to have the option to port it to another platform that works).

Hi Daniel, Windows 8.1 is supported and should work. I've also heard that Surface Pro 3 should work well too, but you'll need a mouse - the stylus is not currently supported.
In terms of licensing it's on a per-person basis, not per-platform. So long as it's just you using it you can install it on as many devices as are supported.

Yeah, I tried the stylus and it didn't work out. Would have been nice. I have it on another system that's more conducive to mouse work. Would have been nice to be able to have my tablet next to my system that I play the game on, especially since older games don't Alt-Tab very well.

I don't have an ETA but I do plan to release a version that's compatible with my Linx 8 super budget Windows tablet. Once that's working I'm hoping your Surface will work too. Hope you can get by in the mean time :-)
