Most people are here delusional on p2w. Everyone starts saying "it's not p2w" and then proceeds to describe what kind of p2w game has. I am not touching my hand on this garbage.
Again you're trying to describe how p2w is right after saying it's not pay to win. Progressing via real life money is pay to win. You get ahead of people who start as same time with you. So you can beat people in an unfair advantage. You, fanboys, keep lying to yourselves.

TLDR; It's only pay to win if you consider unlocking everything "winning" theres NO advantage to the later planes over early planes though. Everything is pretty balanced i've found and I'm not even CLOSE to half of the planes yet.
The pay to win label gets thrown around constantly on reviews of free games. All I can think is that it comes down to what the individual considers "winning."
I find most of these games don't have completion *except* if you're the type of player that defines winning as racing to unlock everything. In that case, your patience will be tested and you're def going to think a lot of free to play games are pay 2 win. OF COURSE THEY ARE IF YOU HAVE THIS POV. That's how devs make money on free to play games. They capitalize on obsessive players that want it all ASAP. Also, there's money to gain from players that believe theres an advantage to late game content regardless if there is or not. Either way I totally respect that disposition and maybe that's just how you game. You will always be frustrated knowing there's whales out there with good paying jobs that enjoy putting money into a game and "racing" to catch up to the dev's latest content in hopes that there's supreme meta in the latest update.
Here's the flip side:
Take me for instance. I'm an adult american player (over 40) with the ways and means to pay to progress faster in any game that permits it. In my case, I don't care about unlocking everything RIGHT NOW. I know I can do it with my money whenever. I'm not bragging, i'm simply pointing out that it's GG EZ for me to just do that and not as thrilling as just playing the damn game. For me, free to play games are a marathon not a sprint and I enjoy the ride towards more and more of the content. Probably a "boomer take" but, trust me, once you kids get good jobs with a lot of disposable income, you'll see. Besides, the ADHD is gonna move you along to the next game in a month anyway.
As for metalstorm. I really enjoy the quick arcadey matches and want to win those matches. That's actually the game object of the game for me. I love that I'm rewarded seemingly win or lose because of the missions. There's a thrill to the gameplay loop of play and progress even if it's slower than some players might like. Ultimately, I've found NO advantages from plane to plane. They are all well balanced and have their pros and cons that make it up to the pilot to decide what they're comfortable using.
At the end of the day, this is how i believe all free to play games operate:
Do you want to "win" all the content as quickly as possible? There's your answer. You pay money to get it all and get that dopamine hit until you move on to the next free to play.
If you really enjoy the the core game and try to win match after match with different planes, it's not pay to win. There's no way to get any sort of technological advantage that i've seen and it's truly based on skill.
Just play the game for yourself on epic and see.
Remember it's free?
