does the demo have multiplayer?

i was under the assumption that it did, but having downloaded it, it seems to be a singleplayer/story mode thing which takes you back to the menu upon completion? :0

You get multiplayer after you reach grandmaster in competitive, before that you play with bots.

i think im misunderstanding something, or encountering a bug. is it normal for the demo to drop you into a singleplayer storymode thing? starting on a malfunctioning space station?

i complete this intro sequence, fighting the big mech with ai teammates, watch the cutscene, then i'm taken back to the main menu, where i need to pick a character and play through that same story thing again

That is a little bug and my friend experienced that once.

He just had to redo it again and the game went through as normal.

You're supposed to be able to explore the Hanger and the game handholds you through 2 tutorial games against bots.
1. 6v6 game
2. MashMat

After that you can play with other players.

gotcha, thanks! i was just fighting the boss again when your posted this reply. i hit the "2 years later" transition and it seems to have put me through this time, rather than back to the menu. thanks :)
