If you're a Linux geek, you should be able to get this kind of information yourself.
I understand how you feel after reading that series of replies, but it would be better to do what you can for yourself as quickly as possible before "convincing others that they are right."
The most popular computing devices for over a decade have been smartphones which are incredibly locked down (dont anyone dare defend Google Android to me, I don't make distinctions between 99% trash and 100% trash) there's no freedom and infact freedom is seen as a negative in the modern world regardless of context. What freedom does Windows offer? Freedom to have MS AI spy on you? Edge and Bing replace your browser every update? Next youre gonna tell me spotify gives enough freedom, yeah like freedom to blow thousands on dollars through years and have nothing to show for it in the end, constantly have songs removed, sound quality significantly worse than a standard from 1982. Man do I love modern tech innovation.
At least don't gaslight yourself into thinking you have freedom, or cinvincing yourself being a slave is fine as you think everyone is since you can no longer even imagine not being one, MS is adding customization software to a blocklist, you're only free to run what they allow you on W10/11.
I didn't know when playing the first beta either, ACE is radioactive.
Tencent has in the past year or so been making a big push into the western market, moving from exclusively mobile trash and big investments and complete buyouts of western companies to pushing out loads of more western style games on Steam by their own developers and they know what they are doing which is why they hide behind 500 fake shell companies, at least they could have the decency to just list themselves as the publisher, you know so its easy to avoid like Ubisoft. The easiest way to tell currently is because they're stupid and all use ACE.
imagine being against competition.
linux is a viable platform for gaming, it has been for years, it's not 2010 anymore.
don't wanna use linux ? okay no problem, just stay on windows, but don't talk about topics you don't understand.
if you're against linux in gaming you're pro-monopoly,
people like that are the reason why microsoft has the monopoly, windows isn't the 1# pc platform because it's any good, windows is absolute trash, it's only 1# because there is no competition.
these people want to maintain the monopoly and will find any possible bs argument to try and discredit linux.
I had to cut the text because it's too long, and anyone can go up and read your comment.
"" gaming isn't playing whatever the newest most popular thing is""
Gaming is playing what I want without limiting myself, I want to play Call of Duty with my friends? install, click play, join my friends.
want to play Fortnite? or Infinity Nikki? install and click play.
want to play Mecha BREAK? install, click play, enjoy.
The freedom to play any game you want, and the feeling of security and confidence that you can play every future release.
""you're actively arguing and fighting to defend a multitrillion dollar corporation""
You are the one who is arguing and lying again.
go to the first comment from me I said I hope OP get the support they want, and I advice them to use Windows if they can because its the best for gaming.
Then you showed up to lie and deny facts lying and saying Linux is better than Windows for gaming, you lied in a reply to me when I wasn't talking to you, so I must reply to you and point your lies, I have to so I can be sure when someone read can find the right information.
I never defended any company, can you distinguish between talk about the quality of a particular product compared to competitors and a person's opinion of the manufacturer? this is the simplest thing in life and every human on planet Earth knows the difference.
being honest about Windows is better for gaming mean I defend Microsoft? if I say X is better than BlueSky mean I defend X the company or just being honest?
Why do I need to tell you about the most simplest basics of common sense? Your behavior is harmful to Linux, your type are an enemy of true Linux fans.
""you're defending a monopoly as if you're paid off, do you not see how this sounds like a shill""
I already said Microsoft is an evil company, but I can't lie and say Windows is not the best for gaming because if I lie i am evil too then.
Linux for gaming is a nightmare, I can't lie to people and hide the truth, when you compare product to product keep your emotions out, lying is not helping your case, because by this behavior you are doing Microsoft a favor.
""Running an anti-cheat isn't gaming""
Words devoid of any logic just to hide a obvious facts, we know anti cheat is not gaming but its a requirement to play almost all of the most popular multiplayer games, so we have only one choice if we want to play is to have the anti cheat installed.
Like "the passport is not traveling" but you need it to travel, yes some people hate it but you need it to enjoy your vacation with your parents and siblings.
Important advice :
How to support Linux?
Be honest, say what you hate to say, be truthful and let people know the major flaws, don't try to deny them, then people will choose.
if someone chose Linux they know what they will get, overtime the people will appreciate Linux community and even if they don't use it they will say good things about them.
But now with people like you, the image of the Linux community is not very good, I swear even my friend who only plays on Switch and never played on PC in her whole life knows how toxic Linux fans are because of people like you
you seem to forget that a huge part of the linux community is simply tired of people claiming bs all the damn time to justify excluding linux players from gaming.
toxicity doesn't come out of nowhere, it's simply a response to years of misinformation, hatred and literal discrimination from both game studios/editors (mostly Ubi & EA) and brainwashed windows users & bootlickers trying to discredit the requests of thousands of players willing to play on Linux
I am a software developer so i correct you on a one point, server side data validation (aka anti cheat) is useful and is most likely present in this game, but it can't handle all situations, most obvious example is aimbots. Those run completely on the client side and server can't do anything about them.
You can add different heuristic checks but they far from ideal and have tendency to false ban. And could be easily circumvented.
The only alternative solution for this is to have deticated department of people whose job is entirely focused on finding cheaters and implementing new countermeasures. And it ain't cheap or easy to find people with such specialized knowledge. So you don't usually see those teams outside of major development studios.
this was done already years ago on many games including FPS titles, it's still being done on a minority of games with community servers.
i disagree with the financial argument, you can delegate a large part of the work to volunteer players which would filter 95% of the cases already.
devs would only have to apply a sanction based on the report and confirmation of cheating.
i've already worked with a studio who did that, there was like 3 people dealing with all the cheaters in the game and it was perfectly fine, it wasn't time consuming nor expensive to run.
despite the bad anticheat (EAC), there was proportionally less cheaters in this game than in other with more protections (like THE FINALS with EAC + Nexon ANticheat + Server side AC), and the said game fully supported linux and steam deck at the same time.
i cannot tell which game or studio worked like that since i've signed an NDA.
you have to be creative in order to reduce cheating, simply slapping an intrusive AC and locking out linux players doesn't do anything.
look at apex which recently banned linux from running the game even tho it worked perfectly for over 3-4 years, guess what happened ? the game is still PLAGUED with cheaters, banning linux made literally ZERO difference. and guess the common denominator with all games plagued with cheaters ?
- no game replay nor public match data
- no overwatch (moderators as spectators, invisible in lobbies)
- no transparency
you don't have to go deep into softwares in order to make the game cheater proof, veyr few are the algorithms able to detect inhuman behaviors especially with the rise of AI and deep learning which blends the line between human behavior and cheats even more. the only accurate tool that we have right now to detect cheaters, are humans themselves.
softwares and programs do not have the experience yet to judge on a case by case basis that someone is cheating, the line has been blurred for algorithms too much to the point where the average F2P game is either :
- integrated with an extremely invasive and dangerous rootkit like valorant with vanguard, locking out everyone not running windows, and even preventing some programs from running even when not in game.
OR
- shipped with a bad (or multiple bad) anticheats in an attempt to protect the game more, like THE FINALS (spoiler: it doesn't work)
we need human. moderation, anticheats have been beaten years ago, and even the new cheat detections are bypassed DAY ONE by some (often expensive) cheats.
This is exactly it, I'm just tired of people lying.
I've even found AI voiced YouTube channels that are full on trying to spread hard misinformation intentionally while spreading actual conspiracy theories while claiming to be a renown author while calling everyone else "nerds" and being incredibly racist... And this channel still uses Windows 7 and encourages people to use Windows 7 more than anything else... You would think that nobody would believe such a channel right? There was an insane amount of people actually agreeing with them and defending them lmao..
This ♥♥♥♥ is depressing.
Whats ironic about this is the team behind Apex actually put out a statement showing a cheater drop after banning Linux saying "see, it worked!" but if you look at it.. well not only did they at the same time put out a massive update on their AC that went far beyond just blocking Linux, they were also already in a steep decline of cheating before they did the ban, if you look at the other statistics such as player count. At the exact sametime they also had a massive player count drop that was to my memory (which could be incorrect) far more than the cheater drop. Then there was also an increase of cheaters at the very end right before they cut it off.
Call me a conspiracy theorist if you like but it feels way too targeted and odd of a thing to say/do, especially when they're intentionally ignoring other stats.
Thats exactly the first problem, thousands, not hundreds of thousands or millions.
The second problem is actually the liability, if you market game as working on linux, and sell it to a Linux user but it doesn't work you are legally liable.
And one of big advantages of Linux for users and the biggest problem for developers is that there are tons of different version of linux and even withing the different versions of the same distributive there is no guaranteed compatibility.
To put it simply, to accommodate 2% of player (based on steam hardvare survey) developers need to put way more work than for the rest 98%.
Its not all bad and gloom though. With SteamDeck and future SteamOS release, developers finally got themselves The Linux to develop for. And more and more games are made with SteamDeck support in mind for exactly that reason.
So if Valve don't abandon SteamOS we can actually see more widespread adoption of linux as OS for gaming.
high elo (predator/master/diam) was FILLED almost exclusively with cheaters running either hardware or software cheats, sometimes even both.
(source: my colleague, former apex pred & master, who was even told by his mates that one of them was indeed using a cronus the whole time to climb (ofc the said mate was blocked immediately afterwards))
the supposed numbers that they claim shouldn't even be trusted either. you can make numbers tell the story that you want. nothing even proves that the numbers aren't just made up cause nothing is transparent, you cannot verify the numbers yourself, you have to believe what they say.
example : Riot, after announcing vanguard, wrote a FAQ regarding the introduction of vanguard in LoL, 2 months after announcing it.
in their FAQ, they stated that «last week» (before posting the said FAQ) there was «800» players on Linux.
which is beyond a joke, since first of all that relies on their ability to detect WINE reliably, while some WINE builds were made to run LoL with extra patches, some of them blending the line between WINE and Windows, so the number cannot even be trusted since you don't know how they handle WINE detection, lots of players were surely detected as windows players due to the WINE patches, which reduces the numbers.
and second, the worst of all, they fcking stated that the linux playerbase was low 2 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MONTHS AFTER ANNOUNCING THAT THEY'D BE ALL LOCKED OUT.
tl;dr : don't trust numbers that you cannot verify
However with the advancements of SteamOS yeah, there's a lot more hope, I highly doubt Valve will abandon it, Gaben is pretty hooked on the idea. Supposedly SteamOS 3 is coming soon from what I've been hearing (though I've not paid too much attention so don't quote me on that). And SteamOS 3 is when they're supposed to finally add official Desktop support.
