There's at least one enemy that looks like a giant boss and at least one single player mission with other NPCs.
Whether that's just an intro mission and that boss might be some sort of extra for the BR mode, we don't know. But it is PvE content.

That sounds like the arcade mode for a fighting game, and those modes are just a glorified training mode because the core of the experience is the PvP.
Shame because I was in the mood for more mecha games but I don't like PvP. Gonna wait for EDF6 and play Air Raider.

Have you not seen half of the freemium games that have "story characters"? Like, have you even seen overwatch? They count all the playable characters as "having a unique story you can explore". It's pure marketing wank and until we see actual gameplay which never happens these days. It's impossible to tell if this is going to be yet another live service battle royale that will get shut down within 2 to 3 years at most.

And then 2-3 years later every one of these multiplayer games just shut down and people who played it keep crying about devs bringing it back.

Though it doesn't really matter anyway. This is an MP PvP game first and foremost. Looking for story in that is...honestly silly.

I hope its something like the characters at least have SP mini-campaigns, and then there's the battle royale. There's breadcrumbs that look like they're from the PvE loaf too, so maybe we'll get that.

If I'm able to make a 47-bot match to screw around in then I'm more than happy. I'm easily pleased, and these mech designs are far more gorgeous than anything I could dream-up in M.A.S.S.

But looking at it close up... I'm getting f2p vibes... which may offer some uncompetitive content, but most likely not.

So I dunno. Maybe this'll finely be the game where I get over my sourness of PvP. If I'm gonna get ganked all night, may as will be in a Ver.KA redesign of Xenogears.

A hope full suggestion is that any live service multiplayer when it reaches EOS should reward that loyalty with a release of a LAN mode of the game DLC package so once the servers are down you can still relive the game with your friends or just battle against bots via remote play. If they have to add a fee then ad a fee. But that's better than the game being completely dead.
