That said, this one has a fairly straightforward story by SaGa standards, so that might help a newcomer connect to it. Not to mention that it's just a beautiful game to look at.
If not this one, then I'd probably recommend either Romancing Saga: Minstrel Song, as that game does a good job of making you feel like you're making progress at all times, or Scarlet Grace, as that one has a super engaging combat system and is fairly minimalist outside of that aspect, so it's easy to wrap your head around.
(And definitely NOT Unlimited Saga - I like that game, but that one is entirely its own, highly experimental thing)
I would say the last recent title, Romancing Saga 2 remake is the easiest to get into as it comes with a lot of streamlined features for new players, features none of the classic saga titles had before. These games are really obtuse and given these games have a lot of replayability from the amount of content, routes, multiple playable character storylines, times events and an level up system that punishes you for over grinding by making the enemies harder (in Romancing Saga: Minstrel Song, you can miss certain event and soft-lock yourself by over grinding too), it can be a little too much for new players, but Romancing Saga 2 remake does a good job making it easy to follow on what to do and where to go. It even gives you an easy mode (classic mode is the hard mode lol). Do know the Romancing Saga series are the ultimate player freedom RPGs (the octopath series got its inspiration from this series), older titles especially don't hold your hand at all but the that's what makes it special. There's also no level up system in these games, you learn new skills by using the same existing skill till you learn a new skill. Thats the glimmer system. In the Saga 2 remake, that game also made it easier to notify you when you are about to learn a new move as well. If you're feeling comfortable and dont mind the art-style I would recommend Romancing Saga: Minstrel Song next as its one of the best game in the series but its also the most content dense title (it'll take 250-300hrs to 100% the game) in the series, or Scarlet Grace as it debatably has one of the best combat systems in the series (the newest installment SaGa: Emerald Beyond takes alot of cues from Scarlet Grace battle system), if you dont not mind the jank U.I and VN approach to the story.
