Battle of South Moundtop
Despite all the QoL updates and changes to make the game more accessible to new players. I can confirm the Battle of South Moundtop can still go ♥♥♥♥ itself. At least with an emulation if the enemy troops didn't move how they should in win in 3 rounds method you could rely on save states.

Great news for me lol. I was hoping they didn't dumb down the difficulty. That battle was notoriously hard and I got hardstuck for ages as a kid.
Possible to steamroll this if your characters are strong enough?

You can't re-equip David. His battle sprite is just a questionable spearman with 150 HP. None of the squad soldiers are actually characters, just pumped up generics.

David's spearman has a stronger base weapon, but his overall damage output is way lower. His only benefit is that he might survive a Charge from a Steel Soldier.

Is there any reward for killing Fake G? I don't recall one offhand. The intended stalling tactic works pretty well, but the RNG is still a bit ridiculous.

This is just a poorly designed battle where the enemy has all the advantages as if the battle was supposed to be lose-able, but made it so you HAD to win. To win, you need cheese tactics. I love this game, but this was a major misstep.

The battle would be a super hard Shogi puzzle from the way it plays out, also against the steel soldiers it makes it even harder >_<. I'm glad the difficulty is still there, too many developers are dumbing down their games.

How is it great news? What's fun about running into a brick wall where there is little chance of winning? Where's the fun in having to soft reset so many times because the enemy isn't smarter than the player it just has way better stats and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rng?

No, because it is basically a side game that uses set soldiers. You can't grind, and you need RNG to win even with the optimal strategy. Running at 3x speed is the only bone the Remaster offers.
considering how many considerable hours of hoping to win this battlefield. is harder than a fricken chess game. hardest part is not losing any Units, while pushing Gustave back, Bucklers with a evasion 8, dont block steel soldier charges often.... RNG hurts in this department.
Ps1 times, spent hours never winning this one.

With Archer support 30 dmg shave, those steel soldiers have about 150 life, they dont take much dmg.

if your really going for the "Gustave slay" its beyond difficult.. because his troops replenshing really hurts. ive tried several times, and get stuck on 2 steel soldiers and cant finish him off and he manages to block my hits lol

Most hated battle ive done.

Battle of South Moundtop was designed that you had to stall the enemy to win. Hard, but once you get them to a point where they can only advance one at a time, you basically won the war. You will suffer heavy losses, but that's why they give you so many reinforcements.

Exactly, do not attack the enemy troops because if you get "lucky" and make any one of them retreat, you end up disrupting their pace and it becomes unwinnable

To win South Moundtop you just need to stand in front of each soldier and defend, you will win by the last round

You can still get screwed by RNG but don't try to win in a different way or you will get frustrated since it'd require massive RNG luck

It's a lore battle, not a challenge battle, the entire idea is that this is a desperate attempt to face an army of unstoppable steel tanks, you have to comply by the gimmick

Ahhh, I never thought of that back then. I thought, "oh just face them head on and you win." Nope, steel army is impossible. I was thinking on how the story progresses near the end of the game because I just skipped that scenario, just frustrating. Now I know.

is this that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ battle where all your people are basically oneshot if you don't use a parry mechanic that the game never tells you about?

Yea they kinda tell you it's impossible, but just like with the Nina thing early game, it's not really well conveyed so you can end up hard stuck

Happened to me too as a teen until i figured maybe i have to find a way to wait for the reinforcements

And then i hit a wall on the end boss and i had to grind my ass off to finish the game lmao

Good memories tho

Yea you have to sit in front of the faceroll and basically just press defend
I always cheated as a kid to beat this battle. I used a code for enemies to die in one hit. It's kind of a crappy battle, but it's simply made to test your patience and wall up. You still need some luck though I think.

I remember beating Fake Gustave by cheating. Pretty sure you don't get anything for it. The devs never intended for you to beat him. It's probably next to impossible to do so legitimately.
The battle is doable. I managed to beat it, no cheats and no 3 turn method. But it took a lot of luck and I nearly lost everything on enemy turn 8 because of one Edelritter unit that just wouldn't die.
