STOP USING WASD IN RETRO ARCADE GAMES
Or even worse, STOP FORCING US TO USE WASD BY NOT LETTING US MAP THE ARROW KEYS.
This is not Call of Duty.

Probably the first comment:
"no yoo shood use a profffetionnnnal ztick or whareber i use, keeboard is for *****."

STOP ASSUMING MOVEMENT MAPPED TO A PERSON'S RIGHT HAND IS SOMEHOW NATURAL.

I can type in all caps too, lol. But seriously, why map to the arrow keys? If using a controller, you wouldn't move the ship with ABXY.

I grew up in a country where most arcades had the stick on the right side, so maybe that's why my brain was trained to use the right hand for movement in a shmup. I don't think it has to do with one being left handed or right handed (I'm the latter). I can naturally play a FPS game with WASD, but for a shmup, the arrows & Z,X,C keys is the only way to play for me.

Most old-school PC gamers grew up using the arrow keys for movement in 2D games.
Since it should be an easy addition, I see no reason for not having this option here.

Arrow keys are a Standard because you need your skillfull hand to do precise dodging since shooting is quite simple.
Just see any other game like Touhou for example. Even Ikaruga has this setup.

Can't speak for Touhou, but Ikaruga's default (at least on console) isn't to move with the right side of the controller. I understand what you guys are saying, it just goes completely against what a controller scheme is by default, even with a lot of shmups. That's why it seems so weird to me.

Best would be let the user remap the buttons but wasd does make more sense as default. All keyboards can support that.

Where not all keyboards have arrow keys. Like on many laptops for example, which often have the arrow inputs under function layers.

Personally I map xinput(xbox) buttons to my keyboard, which results in universal inputs across most games. IE map the xinput dpad to the arrow keys.

It would be very simple for the devs to allow both wasd and arrow keys (or remap). Someone on the dev team didn't do their homework though.

Its the built-in software which comes with the keyboard I use.
For reference its a Wooting HE60 keyboard.

If you want 3rd party option I think reWASD can also do the same thing + more, but its not free to use outside of its trial period.

I support this cause.

Just buy a USB joypad. You probably should for SHMUPS especially Radiant Silvergun with it's combo buttons. Heck I'd even go as far as suggesting a stick if you have the money.

Keyboard is very fast for precise movements, as your fingers are on top of 3/4 of the directional keys all the time. On the gamepad you have to move your left thumb to the direction you want to go.
I think you can be very fast with both, but people tend to dismiss keyboard input because they're not used to it.

I don't like when they're forcing a QWERTY mapping when I'm using an AZERTY one.

But WASD/ZQSD is the standard mapping for PC games involving movements using the keyboard.

I still prefer my shooters with a pad.

PS: but the most perfect way to play a shooter (and fighting game/BtA) is an arcade stick.

I don't get why some people on this thread are defending this when it's just about adding options for the people who want them. It's not exactly rocket science and most games have that.
