Collect / craft / upgrade parts and build your mech + loadout + power up "chips" for specialization. If you dont go for the todays "this and this is best" meta and explor it yourself, than you will have a lot of fun (and "work") to get a real mech mechanic. Furthermore you choose the pilot, give him skills etc.
Combat:
Small "corridor" like mission with an endboss at the end. I am playing current most story only, where bosses are more on the "easy" side without any special mechanic, so i cant tell you anything about the "real" combat against bosses. But i can tell you, that you have to dodge and only button mashing will not work against the "harder" bosses (have do some in side missions). Loadout is important, too, as enemies has weaknesses.
Compare to dynasty warriors: Yes, but on "small scale" focused more on 1 vs 1 fight instead of 1 vs 20.
Story:
You like it or you like it not. Its your choice, if you want to invest time in the anime like story. My advice: if you want to play as "mecha mechanic": skip the story, as you will not progress very fast (its like 20 minutes story, than 5 minute fight per "episode"). You can replay story missions or get a new save file for a only story run(you can have up to 3).
To sum up:
Huge part of gameplay is to build your mech. The "smaller" part is to fight with your mech in missions and test his performance.
