They could be described as ultra cheap crafts/gear that you can upgrade
to make it more useful.
They will be lost on death but that doesn't matter as they are dirt cheap and all upgrades will stay with them.
Upgrades and unlocks with the heirlooms are also shared across all your characters so you don't need to grind for the same stuff multiple times.
Be ready for a grind though as you have to dismantle a lot of greens and blues to upgrade your heirlooms properly
