Official "Benji is worthless" thread!
I don't get why Benji is spoken about with any reverence here. Benji SUCKS! He has more deaths than the rest of my squad combined. He's in huge heavy armor with a big shield and he gets two-shot basically every fight; meanwhile the dude in thin robes and the little girls in skirts can dodge tank any type of attack. BOO BENJI BOO!

Yeah, I never use him in either game. I'm assuming he's supposed to add some comedy or something but... ugh.
idk maybe you aren't using him correctly. His insane HP and Defense make him a pretty decent tank. His speed is irrelevant as long as you don't put him in range of mages. I'm not saying he is op or anything, there are for sure way better units than him. I just don't think he sucks.
I recognize what he does well, but other characters can do that and more. Makes it hard to justify taking him.

Kinda ties into the class discussion thread that's going on that talks about the importance of Fortitude. Along with how Vanguards underperform overall.

But if you like Benji, you should use him. That's what's most important.

He's the kind of character where he really does not handle higher difficulties well at all. On lower difficulties his defences seem good, but on higher difficulties they just really, really don't cut it anymore. On top of that, his low accuracy becomes miserable on higher difficulties too (the enemies you'd most want to use a slow high defence character against are enemies like wolves/assassins/swordsmen, but his accuracy is just too bad and he can't hit them)
yeah good point with the accuracy. I've yet to finish the game on the higher difficutlies but I can imagine that that would probably make him unusable at some point. It's a shame really. Benji was my favorite unit in the first game and he kinda fails to stand out to me this time around. I'm glad I used him on my first playthrough tho if he won't be any good for higher difficulties.
Only in chapter 9 on Normal, but Benji just got MVP in the bar room brawl for me without me trying intentionally, popping an achievement. Gave him a crit kitted out Scimitar for supporting the Southern Riders and holy crap he is one shot slapping enemies with 40-45% crit rate while serving as a decent enemy phaser even due to his bulk and self heal.

He is a very blunt instrument for me, lacking almost any utility compared to others, but he is an effective early game stick to beat people with. Imagine he will fall off as the roster expands if I see units with the raw potential of Arthur, Saxon, Cass, or Zanele though.
Didn't use him in the first game or this game.
Benji AND Tusk are worthless.

HP and Defense don't work that well in the two harder modes. You need huge fortitude cause most things are magic damage.
I think you missed ring that gives every secondary stat based on HP, with it Benji is a monster

That ring is overpowered on any character, it's not really specific to Benji. I actually think other characters are much better suited to using it too, both because Benji is too slow to double attack enemies even with the ring, and also because Benji has no 1-2 range option.
Man, the Benji in the first game was such a powerhouse... or perhaps it was just that Dragon Knights were overpowered, which is why i ran with three of them.

I've already been finding myself struggling with him. Chapter 6 had ~95% magical enemies, so Benji was relegated to nothing but shove duty. He's great against physical enemies, and just keeps healing as he advances, but this game has a surprising abundance of magical enemies.

Tusk is viable for longer due to higher speed. An oversized bow on him works well. And if you get him earlier than normal due to random character order (which I always do), he's very useful early on.

But yeah, it's unlikely he'll be in your top 10 as the game goes on.

H'es great early game. Meh mid game. Completely worthless end game since DD2 falls victim to the same pitfall many strategy rpgs do, in that magic is king. Any class that does not have at least 120 dodge, and/or 20+ speed and fortitude, is going to be absolutely annihilated from chapter 15 onward on deity or demonic mode. Benji hits none of these benchmarks.

The melee units out speed Benji and chip away at his HP as they still will deal about 10 damage per, and the magic units completely eviscerate him with a mere sneeze, AND double attack him in most instances too, provided you don't swap him out of his normal class, but even then, he's just okay in that case.

He's hands down one of the worst characters in the game. His character dialogue is also just completely insufferable to me, which didn't help.

Him and Zuhair are the only 2 units I never bothered to train past level 15. Everyone else I've got in the 40s at end game. I know Zuhair IS actually good, but I already had my team synergy by the time he came along and he rapidly fell behind due to me not having a good axe for him until many chapters later, and not wanting to change his class.

But Benji? He just flat out sucks. Zuhair was a me issue.
Benji is the worst? More like the WORSTEST.
