Kinda ties into the class discussion thread that's going on that talks about the importance of Fortitude. Along with how Vanguards underperform overall.
But if you like Benji, you should use him. That's what's most important.
He is a very blunt instrument for me, lacking almost any utility compared to others, but he is an effective early game stick to beat people with. Imagine he will fall off as the roster expands if I see units with the raw potential of Arthur, Saxon, Cass, or Zanele though.
HP and Defense don't work that well in the two harder modes. You need huge fortitude cause most things are magic damage.
That ring is overpowered on any character, it's not really specific to Benji. I actually think other characters are much better suited to using it too, both because Benji is too slow to double attack enemies even with the ring, and also because Benji has no 1-2 range option.
I've already been finding myself struggling with him. Chapter 6 had ~95% magical enemies, so Benji was relegated to nothing but shove duty. He's great against physical enemies, and just keeps healing as he advances, but this game has a surprising abundance of magical enemies.
Tusk is viable for longer due to higher speed. An oversized bow on him works well. And if you get him earlier than normal due to random character order (which I always do), he's very useful early on.
But yeah, it's unlikely he'll be in your top 10 as the game goes on.
The melee units out speed Benji and chip away at his HP as they still will deal about 10 damage per, and the magic units completely eviscerate him with a mere sneeze, AND double attack him in most instances too, provided you don't swap him out of his normal class, but even then, he's just okay in that case.
He's hands down one of the worst characters in the game. His character dialogue is also just completely insufferable to me, which didn't help.
Him and Zuhair are the only 2 units I never bothered to train past level 15. Everyone else I've got in the 40s at end game. I know Zuhair IS actually good, but I already had my team synergy by the time he came along and he rapidly fell behind due to me not having a good axe for him until many chapters later, and not wanting to change his class.
But Benji? He just flat out sucks. Zuhair was a me issue.
