Why not update the originals?
I’m super excited for this, and I’ll probably pick it up on Switch for easy multiplayer nights with friends, but I am a little confused at why not port the new content to the versions that are already on Steam. Or honestly, why not make this an easier upgrade. You do get a 20% discount if you own the originals, but the price still is significantly higher than the originals. Honestly just wondering what the reason is. I’m surprised this is coming to pc at all, I assumed the collection would be just consoles

an update to the originals would bring in less money and less attention. in 2017 GOG patched the originals so the multiplayer would work out of the box, and it only jumped up to around 1000 players. decent for an old game, but the classic collection will probably have waaay more players than that for a while because it's being marketed as a new thing. also, it's actually better that they leave the originals alone too, cause there's over 15 years of mods that could possibly break with updates. L4D2 did an update a few years ago after a while of no updates that barely changed anything, but it broke several years worth of mods.

Cuz the community would go ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ over the update breaking mods like last time.

The last time they tried to update BF2, it broke the game.

I'm going to give a possible alternative answer because other people gave the, most likely correct answer (which is money). I don't know the business decision for rereleasing Battlefront BUT this could have been a situation where Aspyr wanted to do this, coming hot off of the heals of Tomb Raider, and Lucas Arts/Pandemic wanted nothing to do with this. Lucas Arts/Pandemic could have said give us money and take the source codes. Aspyr now has to do all the work and if they have to do all the work they will want their name as the publisher/developer to take credit for the work instead of giving it to Lucas Arts/Pandemic.

*shrug......who knows right?

people would still be able to download the older version just like they do with Skyrim, Steam allows you to download any previous version of any game via the console. they could also do what Quake did and just have 2 different options when launching the game.

because everything they do that it breaks the game

Pig Phucker you bring up a good point that releasing it as something new would bring more attention and players! Yes! Dude totally. However the $30 price tag brings that percentage down into the negative so it will in fact become so unpopular it is hated and forgotten forever

They tried when they revived the online. I remember they borked the OG release of battlefront II so bad, they reverted it back and never touched it again.

Pandemic's versions are buggy themselves don't get me wrong, but at least they knew what they were doing more than Aspyr.

After how poorly they did with this new collection, don't let them touch the originals.
