Its like saying people who play version 1.0 should be able to play with people using version 2.0.
Doesn't work that way...
This is a single purchase of both games, it is 2 games updated for modern hardware and multiplayer connectivity. It makes more sense to sell this as a new product than simply release as an update to the original games. You might not like it, but it is a smart decision. Companies don't generally dedicate development resources to 20 year old games unless there is some way to recoup the costs.
But i dont understand the logic of it. Why would they sell it as a "new" product when all they do is just update it for modern hardware and multiplayer connection. Why can't they just update the ones we have? This is like selling Patches instead of a game. There's no mention of it being a remastered or anything.
Do you have any idea how much work goes into doing this with an old engine? You're asking for a free update that costs quite a lot of money in development hours. It isn't like we're talking about some hobbyist modders here, we're talking about actual game developers with financial responsibilities.
Maybe if the original games still had a viable playerbase they could update it but that's not the world in which we live. The old games are dead except to a relatively small number of players. Here we have a chance to introduce the game (in a better playstate) to a new group of players.
so yeah they are separated.
