Will this have a lot of players?

I’m a little concerned about pc playerbase as the biggest changes are really aimed towards consoles. And with the original releases being cheaper and still functioning will there be a large enough pool of people buying this?

Listen, Minecraft Dungeons got crossplay only 6 months after the game's release. Give it time, Aspyr will definitely add crossplay to the game in a few months (especially with the countless community posts which talk about the players' disappointment about its absence). Their current objective is to release the game and gather a community of players, and then add all the other necessary things in the future.

Just go to the steam top sellers on the store and you can watch how it just sits in the top sellers and will only go up the closer we get to release.

The problem is that it isn't just a matter of "we'll add it later". You require some form of external servers and profile/account hosting, which isn't something Aspyr have the resources for. They're a small porting company with limited resources, not a AAA studio.

Re-releases and remasters usually get maybe 1,000-4,000 players around launch in my experience. (Steam numbers only)

There's a few here and there that had way more players like Halo MCC. but I wouldn't bet on Battlefront being one of them.

The Quake 2 remaster and Rise of the Triad remaster have full Crossplay multiplayer without needing additional accounts or servers to my knowledge. Rise of the Triad's remaster was pretty much entirely handled by indie devs.

The Steam versions of Classic Battlefront 1 and 2 that are already sold on Steam can also play between PC storefronts (such as GOG) without additional accounts.

Speculating what Aspyr definitely will and will not do is very risky. They are a developer solely devoted to porting ancient games. What they're more likely to do after launching this is move on to their next porting project.
