So, instead of always going to the ruined village after the forest, you may go to the desert or the swamp instead. Then, instead of always going to the mountain to continue, you may go to the cavern or the dungeon.
You won't go through 4 extra areas on the way to the final boss.
Those new areas are here to add replayability, not to make a run longer.
As it's a roguelite game you can play in multi, so you want to be able to complete a run with your teamates in one session instead of having some team members that need to leave before it ends and not be able to play again until everyone is available again to continue.
A run can't be too long.
Yeah I also agree. I think there should be 2 shops per zone, with a few extra rooms in between. I hate having to turn down the elite fight for the only shop of the area. I'd rather choose between shop and safe zone halfway, then shop and elite right before the boss. That way you could cash out halfway through the zone if you wanted, take the elite loot and hold until the middle of the next zone.
Edit: Midboss is a great idea.
I don't think they need to add more areas, the game mobs are already starting to get repetitive. They just need to add the midbosses. There are already elite areas (zone 1 - purple goblins, 2 - armor guy, 3 - dragon pair or lightning boulder, 5 - armor guy with second form), they can add more variety to this. Adding more areas also makes the game easier because you get more items/drops - to the point where it's too easy. If they're going to create more areas to an existing zone, they should just create more zones like Peredeur suggested - but that's already roadmap/probably a workload bottleneck.
