They took away single player skirmish against AI and placed it behind a 10 dollar DLC. I never write reviews but I will never recommend a game that takes content away that was already in the game when I purchased it just to have to spend more money to access it again.

Good game, but poor development team.

Another one of those games that seems to fall behind the category of potential ruined by a developer. These guys are very loose in their communication, and their responses on their forums tend to be unprofessional and hostile towards criticism. There appears to be no plan, and they just sort of wing whatever they want into the game. Which is unfortunate, because this is actually an entertaining RTS game.

The straw that broke the camel's back for me was they put AI (bots) for multiplayer skirmishes behind a paywall DLC. That is absolutely absurd, and I believe goes on record as the first RTS game to EVER do that in the history of RTS games. AI skirmishes is something that practically every RTS game offers, I mean Starcraft 1 and the first Command & Conquer had AI skirmishes in the base game. This game did not, and then they finally add it, BEHIND a paywall. Absolutely absurd.

An official developer's response on the matter:
"if you do not want it don't buy it."

Well firstly Mr Smarty Pants, I do want it; good job reading the OP's post, because we are ticked because we do want it, and you decided to paywall a basic feature. However I won't buy it with that unprofessional attitude. Since my money isn't something you seem to want, then I will keep it to invest in a better product. I am going to say that I am pretty appalled by this move, this is honestly the first RTS I seen put AI skirmishes behind a paywall. You should really be ashamed of yourselves.

What is gaming coming to when basic features are put behind paywalls? What next, will I have to pay for access to graphics options too? If they decide to rectify this then I will flop this review, otherwise no.

I spammed the infantry button until i had roughly 150+ men...

I sent them towards a well entrenched capture point to get slaughtered until the enemy ran out of bullets.

Okay, first of all.

l am not gonna review game itself. l am going to look at it from perspective of person who is forced to play on laptop with mousepad with one hand only [Because, well, l do have only one hand]. This game turned out to be real dream for me. Camera controls can be assigned to buttons on the keyboard, you can even set orders to be given with left mouse button. While game might not be liked by all, atleast it is one that person can fully enjoy despite some health issues.

Men of War: Assault Squad 2 is better than Company of Heroes. There, I said it.

Before anyone cries river or condemns me of heresy, let me explain why. Men of War is an RTS simulation taking the simulation part extremely seriously. There is so much micro possible you wouldn't even imagine that it could exist in an RTS game. Tank plating efficiency for example is actually calculated by the factual plating at the hit zone and the degree of the hit, meaning that there can be grazing shots as well as cases where shells bounce off and then proceed to something entirely different. Maps have destructible elements on so many levels and it is possible to customise almost every single unit as well as loot AND immediately use any and all enemy equipment which wasn't destroyed. Including weapons, ammo, grenades, unmanned vehicles and any and all other support equipment.

This makes the game depths absolutely fantastic.

There is only one major grain of salt: The community is terrible. Like, League of Legends to the power of two.

pros:

-very good infantry combat
-the best tank combat in an rts game ever
-rewards your strategic planning/flanks with letting your enemy be demolished by said strategic actions
-overall quite active playerbase. (don't except 100k people it's a ww2 rts)
-exceptional graphics. especially buildings/nature/vehicles
-good guides/tutorials (they are in the main menu)
-all infantry have their own names and inventory. so do tanks. infantry can run out of ammo as well as tanks can run out of fuel
-live out your fantasies as a ww2 major
-up to 8v8. a total of 16 players. prepare for ultimate lag while playing with 15 other people.
-LOTS of mods
-very very fun with friends
-very well optimized. can run on a potato

cons:

-1/4 of the playerbase actually plays on potatos
-when someone has bad performance, ping/bad computer, everyone suffers with a VERY laggy game
-♥♥♥♥♥♥ voice acting that i always turn off
-infantry animations are not as polished as games like CoH2
-sort of steep learning curve. if you're not new to rts games and are coming from something like coh, you will get used to it within 10~ hours of playtime
-if you are completely new to rts games prepare to hate the game for your first 30 hours
-LAGGGGG
(i recommend to kick people with ping higher than an average of 300 and have less than two performance bars. If they have full red bars boot them immediately

Men of War: Assault Squad 2 (specifically RobZ mod) does things most other rts games don't do.

It throws balance out the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ window and makes it historically accurate. Tank combat is the best I've seen in any RTS games. (IT EVEN FACTORS IN ANGLING WOWWWW). Things like supporting your tanks with infantry and flanking play very important roles. Moreso than games like CoH2.

Infantry firefights can be over in an instant, or take a looong while till anyone starts dying. It depends on how you use cover.

Everything also feels right.

MG-42s cut down infantry.
Jumbo Shermans take 88mm no problem.
KV-2 blows off enemy turrets like a boss.

This game requires a lot of micro, however with common sense you'll be just fine. Before you make a risky move, ask yourself this:

If I do this in real life, will myself, my vehicle, or my men be blown to bits?

If yes, take another aproach to your conundrum.

Anyway, if you like hardcore RTS games then this will be amazing for you.

If you are a fan of the WW2 strategy game genre then I would highly recommend this game as the multiplayer holds many hours of entertainment. The biggest let down for the game is the single player. However, I found myself glued to the seat with such a strong multiplayer, and I can see many people enjoying it.

Now believe it or not, an older game with a community behind it is better than a newer reskin of the game with no community behind it

I'd get this instead of men of war 2
