Well, in vanilla Assault Squad 2...
AP - Armor Piercing, a mainly anti-vehicle shell. Damage enemy vehicle parts, killing or temporarily knock out enemy tank crew. It can also damage AT gun or kill the gun crew, but is unable to blow up targets due to its lack of explosives. AP shell has the longest range compare with APCR & HE.
APCR - Armour-piercing, composite rigid, an anti-vehicle shell. Its range is less than AP & HE shells but with higher penetration, which gives your tank a chance to kill some enemy tanks that your AP shell can't penetrate. However, most tank carry only around 5 APCR ingame, so use them wisely.
HE - High explosive, a mainly anti-infantry shell, though some light armor can be damaged or killed by certain HE shells. Its high explosive charges detonate upon impact, good for killing infantry, destroy enemy fortification, damage garrisoned buildings. HE shell has less range than AP shell ingame, so you may want to kill the enemy AT gun crew with AP shells first then move up and use HE shell to destroy the gun (If you don't want to capture it).

Forgive my mistake if I am wrong.. but I am pretty confident that HE does not have the shortest range. APCR has a 90 meter range I believe, but you can shoot HE rounds farther than that.

Oops, my mistake. Just check it and APCR has the shortest range like you've mentioned.
Thanks for your correction!

APCR - Subcalibre Composite-rigid shell, shorter ranges, but superior penetrative abilities. If your tank has sufficient armor to engage enemy tanks at shorter ranges - APCR is highly recommended for use as the lack of an explosive filler makes literally no difference in this game.

AP - Armor-piercing, standard shell, longer ranges - if your tank has poor armor or a slower reloading time, it is better to keep the enemy at bay utilizing these shells. The main difference is the greater loss of kinetic energy and velocity over distance as well as a significantly larger range and better module damage due to a HE filler. (APHEBC-T/APHEBC/APHE/APBC-T/et cetera)

HE - High Explosive, mid-range, no penetrative ability against enemy tanks. Larger-calibre guns can utilize HE against other tanks with great efficency, and of course firing on an open-turret tank or open combative superstructure tank with HE shells proves to be deadly to the crew - and will more-than-likely kill or incapacitate the exposed crew members allowing you to either knock the tank out for recapturing or allows you to close to range with infantry to destroy it. Certain shorter-barreled, low-velocity tank guns can only utilize HE shells such as the BT-7A's 76.2mm howitzer, the Type 2 Ho-I's 75mm Type 99, et cetera.

Tip: A.I. tank and gun crews automatically load HE shells whenever infantry presents itself to them in greater force than tanks, remember to check your ammunition type prior to utilizing direct control to engage armor.

This is the best explanation & understanding I have ever read over the years of why the
A.I. tanks and gun crews load HE shells instead of loading AP shells
when the bigger threat of an enemy tank is nearby.
Most players just think it's a bug that has never been fixed.
So did I.

DMS have never explained properly why to my memory.
I wonder if they even knew why the engine did it that way ?

AP rounds can make great sniper rounds.
HE rounds can be effective if you hit the flagpoles down low height,
near the enemy waiting there. :o)

It is simplification tough. British never used APCR, but APDS & HESH as advanced anti-tank rounds. Americans used HVAP & HEAT for low velocity guns.
