How do flame troopers work?
My flametroopers never seem to attack the enemy unless I take direct conto, is this normal or am I using them wrong?

You have to direct control them otherwise they wont do anything (maybe why they come with smg?) Make sure you know where your flame thrower is and put him behind cover if not using... Remember, the last thing you want is to spend all that mp and don't get to flame anybody! :)
Direct control is for the best results however you need to learn better ways of using direct control.

For Instance rather than Pressing E and toggling direct control use the temp direct control key CTRL

The idea behind this is you use your mouse to select the unit then order him to run (double click move order)

when he reaches the point where you think you can range the enemy quickly hold CTRL and use your mouse to aim and shoot then when you need to move quickly release CTRL and double click move order again.

This should assist you.

Flamethrowes are so underated in this game, very good for 75 mp and if used right they can kill easily over this amount. Learn how to use them I'd listen to Deus' guide!

They are very situational. Also,I have found that they can be very beneficial on skirmish vs the AI. They are hard to make worth their expense vs good players on multiplayer though, as decent players avoid bunching their troops up, thus making them harder targets. Keep at it... some people use'em and some do not.

Personally, I use them quite a bit ;)

Flame throwers are your Ace up your sleeve.
Have them out of sight behind a building or a hill.

When you see the enemy has clumped his troops attack however running a flamer thrower straight at the enemy will get him killed.

Lay a trap, have your men lay down covering fire on the enemy [F6 key is covering fire, once you press F6 select where you want your soldiers to start firing]

Once your men are distracting the enemy use the flamer to strike.
This can be devastating if executed correctly.

interesting though: the flamethrower guy from the russian shock troop hero unit does attack on his own and accepts comands to burn someone/ something without direct control!

Flamethrower guys they attack themself, anyway they always did in AS1. Here in AS2 the AI is sometimes really hopeless (although I heard rumors it is the same AI as in AS1): tanks don't turn their turrets to the enemy when the enemy is comming, or they turn frontally to one small enemy soldier while from another side there is the enemy tank comming, soldiers stand when someone shoots to them until they gets killed, without hiding or shoting back, so I am not surprised that flamethrower guys don't do their job sometimes and we must help them with direct control.

Could it be the fact that he is equipped with body armour? Been trying to get the AI to actually utilize the flamethrowers and am wondering why they are not.
