Men of War: Assault Squad 2

Men of War: Assault Squad 2

MoW:AS2 worth it for single player?
I am basically a single player guy. (I know, I know.) I am a dinosaur, going back to the Steel Panthers and Panzer General days.

I have all the earlier MoW games, and CoH.

Is Mow:AS2 worth getting, *for the single player*?

Thanks!

Grab a friend and do a co-op missions. I think this is what for AS2 was created, but new DLC added three old campaings, that was good in past, but now they feel "uncomplited" for me. But still they worth a while of your time. And original AS2 Singleplayer is a "copy-paste" of AS1.

Well there's 2 dinosaurs mate cos I'm just the same! That's why I love COH 1 & 2 so much because of the skirmish mode which means you never tire of playing it.The fact that this improved retro upgrade to the game has been (re) released adding more SP content in the form of 3 campaigns confirms that there are plenty of us out there too (see the recent steam announcement).
Would recomend you look into Battle Academy 1 & 2 (on steam), Battlefront.com's Combat Mission series and also the John Tiller Campaign series, these are all excellent WWII SP strategy games and historical too, pricey but I guess it's a niche market.

There are lot's of SP missions and mods for MoWAS2 in the workshop.
Kept me busy for ~10 years (the whole Men of War series has had great modding support during the years).
Thousands of hours (My Steam profile shows 750 in MoWAS2 alone) worth of gameplay.

No. The AI is just too stupid. They just flood you with vehicals and troops to over power you.

Prefer the ai in COH1 & 2 TBH, it can really test you out and like Tenko says it's a lot more interesting than just endless waves of reinforcements. The COH ai actually builds forces to counter you. For example last night in COH2 SP mode with a community map, I built a nice 88mm Pak 43 emplacement in a good tactical location, and sure enough pretty soon a Cromwell blundered into sight and got toasted. However from that point on the ai didn't waste any more tanks but assaulted it with a combination of mortar fire and infantry - awsesome that I got my arse kicked by a computer!

The AI in CoH builds forces to counter you without them actually having seen which units you have on the field (atleast that is how CoH (1) and it's expansions worked).
The AI could also "artillerate" you without having eyes on your troops (not actually spotting/doing recon).

Plus the biggest downside. MG's with armour piercing rounds can kill tanks in CoH Vs the armour system in MoW (where tanks can't be killed by a machinegunner with speshul powers)

Also, CoH feels like the shootouts in "The Naked Gun"and "From the files of: PoliceSquad"

Many tanks have been killed(in as2) because of a .50 ripped off a dead tank and only Heavy Tanks are immune. CoH Replicates that just not with .50s but with surpression abilites.

I don't think MoWAS2 is worth buying if you want to play single player only. Before the Assault Squad happened former titles like the original MoW or Red Tide had a lot of diversity in terms of maps and objectives. In MoWAS2 as a standard you have 5 different campaings for every nation but the missions for each of them are almost the same. Of course they take place in the different settings, seasons etc. but the basics stay exactly the same. First mission for every nation is always assault skirmish that ends with 10 minutes defence, second mission is always 3 lines assault skirmish, third mission is always armor defence skirmish and so on. DLC missions are not any better in that matter and follow the same principle. Assault Squad titles are mostly multiplayer centered and single player feels like it didn't recieved enough attention, but it was probably never supposed to be the main part of the game. I base my opinion on my own experience after finishing most of the game on heroic difficulty except for the few last SU maps that I still have to play. Ask away if you want to know anything else.

I just like the variety better in COH because of the endless stream of new maps all with new challenges. I enjoy MOWAS too, but find the SP easily more rewarding long term in COH.
Re. the mg killing tanks I don't think I ever seen that happen because it takes so long - either the tank wipes out the mg team or somebody else does! It would be a risky tactic to try and go head to head with an HMG against anything more powerful than say a 223 or a universal carrier.

I was going to say that - splintering inside a tank could be very dangerous to the crew from sustained HMG fire with AP rounds.

Single Player CoH is good because it actually has an AI that will try and fight you(Because Relic isnt New to building AI for MP). That AI is a good AI that when put on HARD can actually be a challenge not due to Handicaps but because they build right. AS2 has no such AI which is why there are only Skirmish or Missions that tell them to rally at certain points.

Then you must not play alot of AS2 MP making Terminator squads made up .50 hms (its not a mg team, its ltterally a guy walking around with a .50MG) If I recall you can take out a PZIV from the front (course it takes alot of hits) and T34 from teh side anything under(older) then those it will kill easilly. and of course shreds infantry.

COH2 is a winner alright and if I was ever marooned on a desert island this is the game I'd take!

If Relic ever bought MoW ide fangirl all over again.

But when AS2 was put in Early Access, then suddenly "Released" out of the blue when people were refunding their money.(before the return policy) Not only did they learn never to use Early Access again, They also taught me to never trust them again, No matter how much they try to play on words to start the hype train.

I loved the gameplay but the AI in these games is terrible and totally ruined it for me. Constantly lost units because they would stare at enemies far away behind walls and just let things kill them. A huge issue with vehicles because they will turn to look at an enemy way off to the side and enemies can just go straight up and kill them.

Thanks, guys, you're the best!
