Khalkin Gol
Hey there!

So I decided to start ploughing through the missions on Normal and I decided to do so in a chronological order. However I can't even get past Khalkin Gol as the Japanese.

I start by ordering one troop of infantry, one troop of mortars and one sniper to add to the infantry you start with. I attack machine gun positions with the mortar and infantry with the sniper before crossing the river and grabbing the flags on the other side. However, that's about as far as I get.

The enemy spawns way too many units at a much higher rate than I do. Whatever armor I call in to aid me is destroyed by their deployed AT units and their numerous tanks which outnumber me. Whenever I destroy one of their tanks, it's at a great loss because I'm constantly fighting a two front battle and outnumbered on both sides. I can't advance before I use my mortar to take out any machine gun nests but the time it takes me to kill a machine gun nest allows the enemy to spawn two or three new tanks that will advance from two fronts and destroy me in a crossfire.

How do I beat this map?

u need banzai charges so you can get some Ai units fighting with you, it helps alot especially if you are fighting on 2 fronts, the idea is to let the bots duke it out while you sweep what's left, make sure to support your Ai allies when u call in a banzai charge though, like taking out tanks or anti tank emplacements with mortars u can pretty much win the mission after with just this ability and an at guy

I always try to use direct control. But without a mortar, my troops are hopelessly mowed down by machine gun fire. Consider that all enemy troops are entrenched. How will AT and flamethrowers help me here if the biggest initial threat are entrenched machine gunners?

Likewise, there is an artillery piece on the third island to the left, which is firing rather rapidly. No soldiers can get close due to, again, machine gunners. So mortars seem the only choice, since they can shoot at it from afar and over buildings.

Capping the first line in that mission is difficult. Here's what I would advice after beating the map on heroic:
- Don't buy snipers (in singleplayer in general, or at least in the 3 lines assults missions), they kill slowly, require a lot of micromanagement and cost too much.
- Try not to use mortars unless really needed. They can be sometimes necessary like in Koenigsberg, but they cost huge ammount of MP's and become pretty much obsolete after you take the 1st line, as the next lines are all about destroying enemy AT guns.
- Press Backspace to lower the game speed in tight situations.
- Here is the opening I have used for that mission: Buy one Infantry Unit and move all your soldiers combined to the far west. Crawl close to the left-most flag and smoke the area in front of you (you should have ~4 smoke grenades). Get your soldiers closer and grenade the flag and bigger packs of enemies with the cover of the smoke, then rush what's left with your two squads. Don't mind the downed soldiers, if you do everything fast enough you should be able to easily heal them all back with your medic. After capping the flag buy Type 92 armored car. It's a really good infantry killer: It's cheap, got 5 mg's and huge ammount of ammo. It will support your armor well as most of the japanese tanks don't have the frontal turrent-coaxial mg and the lack the stopping power against infantry. Use it to capture the middle and the far-right flag, you should have enough firepower to easily overwhelm the enemy infantry. After you cap the middle zone, buy one Chi-Ha 47 and then the next one as soon as possible.
- Throughout all the mission your armor will be inferior to the enemy's. Try to lure the enemy tanks inside your teritory for safe repair after you incapacitate them with your tanks or infantry.
- Banzai charge and 200mm mortar (use it to take down AT guns) are good buys, don't bother with Ho-Ni 2 Artillery.
-As a rule always rush the capture of the first line of the defence as much as you can to have a steady supply of the MP's and take a slow but steady approach on the others.

Good luck.

Thank you. I will try this out tomorrow!

Use attack ground a lot with mortar if you are holding vs enemy attacks in choke locations or firing at location that has enemy defenses along with incoming infantry.
