Men of War is basically the ArmA of RTT games. As pointed out before, CoH is pretty casual compared to this, and a lot "gamier", as most things in MoW are not abstracted into numbers and "dice-rolls" (or at least not to the same extent as in CoH) but calculated individually on a realistic basis.
Each soldier has his own line of sight, that is realistically affected by objects and foilage (so no magic "invisibility" button for snipers), projectiles are actual projectiles and not magic hit-scan rays of death (so you can pull off some nice ricocheting stunts with AP rounds), pretty much every object on the battlefield physically reacts to what is going on around it (wanna drive that Sherman over that frozen lake to flank the enemy? Too bad it was too heavy and crashed through the ice).
As a result, MoW usually forces you to think about your tactics less in terms of game mechanics, and more like a real commander (at least the ones I played so far, which are all except AS2... but I think I'm gonna rectify that tomorrow).
AS2 miss some very key points to be called WWII realistic like:
Lack of morale for your soldiers and suppressive fire not being effective as it should.
Lack of realistic communication, LOS is collective and insta shared among all soldiers
Soldiers don't fight in squads but as single individuals, there are not enough advantages or tools for keeping your soldiers with their squad leaders and fight like a squad.
Too small maps
Grenades play a too much decisive role in how firefights end
Weapons not lethal enough
Very odd Scale of battle between soldiers and tanks
Fast paced gamesplay
So yeah this RTS is like 1000 times better than COH and kind of realistic but there are also many things that push toward the arcade genre and looking at the gameplay outcome this is not really how a WWII battle should look like.
This just to be clear because I have passion for WWII and there are people out there like me and if you tell them this game is WWII realistic then there is the need to clarify on some important points, it's a great game but not that WWII realistic, but of course this is a great RTS, I have lot of hours on it and realism mods improve the experience on it a lot for the ones like me that have real passion for WWII.
Pretty much agree on most of those points. I still think the comparison with ArmA holds up, ArmA as well has lots of shortcomings compared to real warfare. There are also other aspects I find similar between the two, one important one being modability and how the game can easily be used more in style of a giant sandbox with the editor.
Also note: except for the morale/supression/squad system most of those unrealistic aspects are more a question of tweaking variables, which again ties in with the "sandbox" aspect. MoW, just like ArmA (and Mount & Blade: Warband) is a game that I barely ever played unmodded (AS2 is still somewhat lacking in that regard I guess, but it's still young so that's to be expected).
I also don't think vanilla MoW is a super realistic game, but a really good authentic framework due to how the engine works (just like ArmA).
Is also true that the MOW tank battles and how tank rounds penetrate enemy's armours are better on MOW than on Arma and in fact I suggested in the past on Arma forums to take MOW as example of good Tank penetration/damage system.
And yes I agree with the fact mods are super important for both games, I would like to see DMS to put more effort in helping and valorizing our modding community, making maybe a competition between modders with prizes or whatever is needed to improve the modding side.
So yeah I agree with you, I just wanted to clarify how much realistic is MOW and what is missing to make it WWII realistic, some of the things I have listed will hopefully be "fixed" by our modders and will made it in to Realism mods.
