what is the "knowledge index"

It gives you a sense of your regions technological ranking vs. other regions.

Is there any way to improve research speed? Does building more research complexes but not using the que space increase it?

The only thing that affects research speed is the efficiency rating.

I was under the impression that the "Education" social spending category improved research? I'm pretty sure it did in 2020.

Re: knowledge index, are you saying that number represents your overally rank from first to last? I have 6 research centers and are researching at maximum speed and my index doesn't seem to change.

I will do more testing of the Knowledge Index, perhaps a bug has crept in there.

I usually disable the minister's control over it.. Is there a specific way to increase research funding?

Well I think the Knowledge Index might be bugged. At least with some scenarios. I tried it out yesterday. I gave Denmark all the tech's and unit designs possible (through modding), yet still only ranked 15th world wide. Same scenario, different country, I researched everything with China and then ranked #1.

With Denmark I tried it out for 1936 - The path to war, and china was the Cold War 1949.

I then did another test with Denmark, to see if it was the modding aspect itself, yet even when researching everything in a couple of days (using a trainer, which doesn't affect the AI) but still only ranked 15th. Found it weird, since i.e. the US hadn't even researched stuff like the M4 Sherman yet, while I was rocking Antimatter powerplants and SDI.
