Serious Question
I am not here to start any political debates or anything like that. I am just curious from a first party perspective. What do you all believe Sony will be doing now? Are they going to go full steam ahead on the supposed tidal wave of live service games, or do you think this is enough to cause them to pivot?

And this isn't a console bait either. I have all three consoles. I play them all equally. I hope everyone Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony succeed in the games industry. Competition is healthy!

So yeah, what do you think is going on at PlayStation HQ right now?

They will continue on their course. They will double-down. They will think the only reason Concord failed is because it wasn't woke enough. These people don't live by logic anymore.

Chinese studios are now entering the AAA space, and from the press and dev reactions (with some outrageous articles on Wukong), they are scared that the west will no longer drive game design and their jobs are at risk.

BOOBA will return due to market pressure.

Sony is already bringing in another live service slop, likely because these were already planned for years and just being announced and released now. If they're smart they won't start making any new ones now. We'll see.

They already cancelled several projects like TLOU MP and laid off a lot of Bungie employees.

Stuff like Fairgame$ (Haven Studios) where they bought the studio will probably still come out, but honestly from the first trailer it's like/dislike-ratio isn't much better than that of Concord.

I mean, who cares what Sony decides to do or not with live services ?

What's important to us is that Sony or any other gaming Studio stops doing game looking and playing like this and pivots back to making games focussed on good gameplay and decent good looking art designs.
Meaning, sticking to gameplay that looks fun to play (slow movement shooters = not fun) and characters who look like super models and not like your average Walmart customers.

Yup, i wonder when they'll get the hint.

How did you take this post from me? This is literally word for word what I posted. Same title and everything. How does this happen?

Hopefully lose a significant portion of stock, make cuts, and continue to spiral. ♥♥♥♥ em.

They will wait 6 months from the release date to announce an apology for the state of the game and announce the game going F2P and the players who paid for the game will get a symbolic sum of ingame currency as an apology/show of appreciation for their dedication and trust in the game.

If they make the game go F2P sooner than that without offering everyone full refunds it would make it look like Sony/Firewalk studio always planned to make the game F2P and that could make the initial price of the game seem like a scam in the eyes of lawyers.

They'll do just what Sony has done for the last fifteen years; latch onto the latest zeitgeist or FOTM gimmick/game and try to half-assedly replicate it without understanding what actually made it popular in the first place

except now everyone takes the best part of a decade to make a video game, so it'll be something that was popular 7-8 years ago like a battle royale or among us clone

It's not going to make a difference. Think about it - they spent 8 years and hundreds of millions of dollars making a game for blue haired leftists who don't buy or play games. That level of stupid can't be fixed.

What they'll do is blame its failure on toxic masculinity, misogyny and racism, and continue on this same trajectory, blowing hundreds of millions more on nonsense projects that just don't appeal to actual gamers.

Look at Disney. Everything they make for the past few years is a colossal failure. They're bleeding money faster than a cut artery. Has this caused them to pause, take stock of the situation, understand why they're failing, and correct course? No lol. They just blame it on raycizzum and keep making garbage.

They probably knew the game wasn’t going to land as soon as the initial trailer hit YouTube after the state of play showcase and the dislike numbers kept rising. They probably were really surprised by how little it sold, because they’re PlayStation and they haven’t experienced a failure like this in recent history (if ever).

Look at it like this- every game that PlayStation have put out in the last 7 years or so (with the exception of Days Gone) got called “woke” or “progressive ” by all the people celebrating this game’s demise. Especially the recent ones like Spider-Man 2, Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West. Since the vast majority of them were successful games, that would indicate that Concord failed for different reasons.

I think this will make PlayStation realize what a coin toss live service games can be either abandon the strategy of releasing more or perhaps realize that high production quality combined with the PlayStation name isn’t enough to launch a successful live service game. The gameplay itself needs to be innovative and original. The marketing for this game (combined with its lackluster nature) really setup the game for failure. I think Sony needs to go back to announcing games a year or more ahead of release instead of just a few months before. Concord won’t hurt them financially, keep in mind that HellDivers 2 profits probably offset the losses and PlayStation gets 30% of all revenue on their platform. That’s 30% of all the Call of Duty money, Fortnite money, EA Sports money, etc. They won’t be going broke anytime soon, no matter what the incels say.

At the very least, I think they are gonna re-evaluate all 10 of their remaining live-service games they have in the pipeline. It would also depend on whether they are able to resist sunk cost fallacy. Sega was able to resist it which was why they cancelled hyenas despite having already spent a whole bunch of money on it. If hyenas had released, it would likely have done very poorly, even if initial reception was better than concord.

I also think that Concord's seemingly lack of marketing is also an indicator of Sony's "course correction". Bear in mind that the idea to have 12 live-service games by 2026 was the idea of the previous CEO who had been abruptly let go by the board (the pretext is "retirement") shortly after the announcement of that plan and the subsequent mass retrenchment. My belief is that the board of directors was unhappy with such a huge gamble and this affected concord by way of scaling back its marketing (and probably development as well) budget to avoid putting more money into something that they don't believe in.

Sony might have done an internal focus group on the potential reception of concord in the current environment and found the results to be negative, thus deciding to "abandon" (ie low key release) it before release.

Sony will double down and continue releasing ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games like this, in the hopes of one actually being super successful.

Live-service games by design cannot have good gameplay, as they are riddled with systems designed to exploit players.
