Did they even advertise?
I never heard of this game until I heard about the developer calling critics 'talentless freaks' and having a meltdown on twitter.

No ads anywhere. Not on YouTube, Steam, anywhere. I still get Overwtatch 2 ads and I never even played Overwatch since the first game.

The trailers were on YouTube, at least, and so was the advertising. I guess they figured out you're not 'inclusive' enough for their 'wonderful' game, so the ads never showed up for you.

I have yet to hear of anyone among my friends who didn't hear about this game through me.

I never even heard of this game until I happened to chance upon an article about it on Reddit. That's what I find so funny about these games - like, I know plenty of people in real life who love gaming, and not a single one of them ever talks about them. Ever. Even the people who are technically part of the target audience never do. And it's not like I live in the backwoods, either. Even the kids don't talk about them. I remember hearing all about how "Gen Z killed Saints Row" when the reboot came out, and yet not a single zoomer I know even mentioned it. They were too busy, if anything, playing GTA Online or Fortnite or whatever.
Criticisms - valid or otherwise - aside, it sounds like the algorithm screwed this game over big time.

That, or they only advertised to the modern audience and no one else.

There were trailers, there were animated shorts, there were billboards and I even saw a bus covered in advertisement for this game at one point. Yes there was a marketing campaign for this game, it's just that people didn't talk about it.

Exactly. That modern audience they imagined just doesn't exist in the real world
That's bizarre, this game shadow dropped from my perspective. Steam usually does a big banner ad when a AAA game releases or it has a big update but I don't recall them doing that either.

I saw some previews on biggest gaming site in my country. Since then, all the promo is from memes and this beautiful steam discussion site. Maybe they did some promo for modern audience...

I actually had to actively look up the release date because I didn't want to miss this for the world. Literally everyone knew it was going to flop and I knew the discussion page would be a joy to read.

No, Sony was smart enough on saving money by not advertise this terrible piece of software. Would've been better to not spend 100 million bucks on it but hey it's their money.
