Is this game actually bad or is it just overshadowed by CVS2

I haven't played either because I wasn't into fighting games when they were new, but I see CVS2 getting high praise all the time while SVC is called broken in the rare cases it gets mentioned at all. Is it actually that bad? And if so, why re- release it?

It's a weird game for sure, made when SNK Playmore was just getting off of its feet after the original SNK died. The game was rushed, there's glitches, it's not very well balanced, and over all it's just weird and janky, at least in comparison to CVS2.

That said, it does have a fanbase and people who like it.

I dont think its 'bad' but its certainly on the 'meh' side thanks to a lack of modes, muddy spritework/backgrounds and a real sense of jank.

Cool game, its just really REALLY broken balance-wise, hilariously so.
Geese Howard's normal reppuken completely cancels out Ryu's super hadouken, and that is just one example.

The stages were disappointing with way less animations in the background than games like KOF, but the character sprites are amazing.
I would have prefered tho that they would keep a realist cast more or less, like Capcom did for Capcom vs SNK.
No a fan of the aliens and demons and all.

It is good and definitely worth a try, but maybe not a buy for you at full price.

The comunity of KOF around the world prefers this game instead of Capcom vs SNK 2, but the Street Fighter comunity hate this game
But people are right when they say that this game was not SNK's best, and that it came out when it had already died to the rise of 2D fighting video games.

It's not a bad game at all. The gameplay and inputs are really tight like in KOF games. If you're used to SNK's old stuff you'll feel at home. The Capcom characters play a lot differently than in SF, although they have pretty much all their moves. It's definitely a lesser CVS though, as it has nowhere near the roster size of that game. Just wish we could've gotten more prolific KOF characters like Krauser or Rugal instead of the SNK joke characters.

It's not good, but it has some rather gorgeous sprite work for the Capcom characters that, IMO, makes it worth a look.

It also has one of the last great "bad SNK English" translations.

Competitively it's an absolutely bad game. Nobody plays serious tournies of this game. You are wasting your time and money if you expect any kind of longevity in the community for this game.

I'm not going to argue here long, but this game regularly gets several dozens of replays on Fightcade every day, often well over 100 replays in one day alone. People have ran plenty of tournaments for it. There is a dedicated community, a wiki, a video guide, a discord, an active playerbase, people who have reached A rank on Fightcade, it has been seeing a resurgence since GGPO because SVC Chaos has had rollback for much longer than CVS2 ever did. It's always on the front page of Fightcade and there's literal hundreds of replays to watch on YouTube, people absolutely do play this game competitively. It's broken, yes, but that's also why you play it. Expecting every fighter to be "balanced" when most of them aren't is dumb. If you don't like it then that's fine but there is a very active competitive scene for the game with a ton of tech behind it. It's a ton of fun to watch unfold.
