Homeworld 2 Classic crash to desktop atioglxx.dll fix AMD
If like me you have an AMD card and keep crashing to desktop upon launch of Homeworld 2 classic, simply go to this link and download this zip file.
http://www.thegameengine.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/atioglxx_fix.zip
It just involves putting the dll into the bin/release folder where the Homeworld 2 exe is and hopefully it should be fixed for you.

@Stupid Sexy Vladimir, there needs to be a space between every part of the command:

expand *SPACE* atioglxx.dl_ *SPACE* atioglxx.dll

The error is basically telling you that you haven't specified an output file, because you have very likely missed the space between the input and output files.

Awesome tag by the way. :)

It never worked for me on my desktop, but after some research a few weeks back with someone else with a similar problem on the Gearbox forums I found a way to fix it without downloading files from 3rd party sites that are becoming obsolete. You need to download the driver package in which the working version of atioglxx.dll is from AMD, and extract the file itself (to avoid using the complete legacy driver) - this has so far fixed 100% of people with this specific problem. Copied from one of many times I posted this in this forum already.

Here is the list of legacy drivers for AMD graphics & Windows 7 (Windows 8 only use the top 4)

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous?os=Windows%207%20-%2064

For me, the 14.4 version works so try that one first. Follow the instructions below to extract the opengl library .dll we want to put in override:

1) Download the driver from AMD. Run it (self extracting zip) and make a note of the extraction directory, or change it to your preference. The default is C:\AMD\AMD-Catalyst-14.4-64Bit-Win8.1-Win8-Win7-WHQL-Aug. When it has finished extracting Click 'Cancel' to abort the install of the whole driver package.

2) Navigate into extracted package \Packages\Drivers\Display\WB6A_INF\, then select the folder B171094 with a single left click, then hold 'Shift' and Right Click the B171094 folder and select 'Open command window here' from the context menu.

3) At the command prompt, type:

expand atioglxx.dl_ atioglxx.dll

and press Enter. A dialogue will inform you the file has unpacked so you can close the command window. Now you can simply cut/copy/paste the atioglxx.dll file from the B171094 folder into your \Homeworld2Classic\bin\release folder.

4) If it does not work go back to the driver list and try the previous driver until you find the one that works for you, hopefully you will not have to do this as I have seen no problems with version 14.4 so far.

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH, its worked for me.

Bonjour.

Le jeu se lance mais un message d'erreur arrive disant "HW2 can not launch, please change your desktop color depth to 32bit".

Merci d'avance.

I cannot get any homewold mods to run. it goes to black then crashes on launch. I have tried updating AMD, Adding DLL and nothing seems to work. Why is this so difficult?

it sayes "Cannot open Input File."
Sammi79 Oct 27, 2015 @ 8:22am
@Major_rigs - that sounds like a typographical error in the command.

the input file (the compressed package) is atioglxx.dl_
the output file (the uncompressed file we are about to create) is atioglxx.dll

when using the expand command there must be a space after the command and between the input and output files:

expand {SPACE} atioglxx.dl_ {SPACE} atioglxx.dll

then press enter.

Hmmm I just tested it on mine and it is no longer working on Win 10

Will experiment to try to find a fix.

It's an infuriating problem, on my laptop (Win 7x64) the 14.9 version works but on my desktop (win 8.1x64) it wouldn't but 14.4 would/

Now my desktop has upgraded to win 10x64 neither of these work I am guessing I need to root through the older drivers until I find one that works x) that or revert to win 8
