I too find the irony palpable.
For you the "Mothership standing by" line is the equivalent of the Solaranite Bomb. They just can't quite grasp the logic of blowing up the sun can they?
This is a PC gaming icon from before that poison came into the PC gaming industry. You should not be defending its taint in this celebration of the greater quality that being free of that influence was able to accomplish.
Regarding the dramatic value of such emphasis now, versus in your reference:
A reference from earlier drama does not apply, because those examples come from an age of simpler understanding of presenting drama, and the use of it then actually holds entirely different meaning within the context of its use compared to its modern usage. Because of the development of understanding of dramatic nuances, and also the growth of modern concepts that supercede those earlier emphasis tropes, such mechanism cannot be used to similar effect today seriously, because doing so requires be wilfully dismissal of the much more that is understood now, and so when such an attempt now *is* made, it no longer presents the perceived truth which was presented when a generation was naive of today's much more consideration.
you are either too young... or I am too old
For the previous 2 (ish) hours of game you are told over and over the only chance for your people is to get the mother ship fully operational, and then finally you are told "(it) is standing by", and on top of all that is is delivered by Karan S'jet, who is not entirely human after merging with the mothership core.
It is in the release trailer for one reason only, too give everyone who has played the game goosebumps.
By the way, just so you know...calling something 'pretentious' then having absolutely NOTHING to back up that statement does not make IT pretentious, but it does make you
I couldn't express concerns about altering the atmosphere of Homeworld otherwise. This thread isn't about the line, just the pause in the delivery. If it's only in the trailer, cool. It probably is.
What does it make someone for that statement to have no relevance to this thread and subject?
If you’re worried how well Gearbox are going to respect the project, you could have started out on that point and chosen a few examples (like this bit of dialogue) of how you think they might continue in screwing everything up, so not to make you look quite so pedantic.
(Don't get me wrong, I completely understand your point of view. There's just nothing much that can be done about it now, especially not anything that ranting about it on the internet could accomplish.)
