The Mothership... is standing by

I hope that recording is just for the trailer and not in the actual game. Why the lame pause between Mothership and "is standing by"? It's so pretentious and kills the sense of realism.

Wow. I find the OPs topic to be a little...pretentious. Dude, it's a game. Enjoy it.

The irony of calling the VO pretentious and then trying to be a forum professor was not lost on me, either.

I too find the irony palpable.
The irony of criticizing the answering of a question as trying to be a professor, no doubt.

Ridiculous thread. Just because of singular line of dialog in a video game trailer. And OP "sociopathic design philosophy" and "lowest-common-denominator minds" really? You sound like the alien captain Eros in Plan Nine From Out Space: "You see? You see? Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qro7oBzUBos

For you the "Mothership standing by" line is the equivalent of the Solaranite Bomb. They just can't quite grasp the logic of blowing up the sun can they?

It's pretentious because it's unnatural, and is done to build up sentiment - considerations that a crew announcer will not have while speaking. It also falls short of the original games' stoic-ness, and is contradictory to the tone of the voice, which aims stoic-ness, but then undermines it with pretension. They are obtuse in effects.

It is a reduction of the integrity of the Homeworld atmosphere, inlaying into it a quality of cheapness. It is also a sociopathic design philosophy, going for a simplistic emotional return from the audience slice having lowest-common-denominator minds, but at the expense of overall value and meaning of the whole presentation.

How young are you? No dictionaries in your sphere of the internet?
It is sociopathic design philosophy. Sociopathism is the disconnecting of details in a mind, removing the context between them, resulting in blunted depth and scope of emotion but concentrated into smaller points - easier to anger, easier to satiate, and seeking of gratification forcefully. That is the design philosophy behind attempts similar to what I mentioned. It is willfull reduction of considerations, achieving sensation by carving away others, rather than by fleshing out the overall concept further. This has been standard operation in the gaming industry for 10+ years, and is the very reason why PC gaming suffered so long and hard to suit console gaming crowds.

This is a PC gaming icon from before that poison came into the PC gaming industry. You should not be defending its taint in this celebration of the greater quality that being free of that influence was able to accomplish.

Regarding the dramatic value of such emphasis now, versus in your reference:

A reference from earlier drama does not apply, because those examples come from an age of simpler understanding of presenting drama, and the use of it then actually holds entirely different meaning within the context of its use compared to its modern usage. Because of the development of understanding of dramatic nuances, and also the growth of modern concepts that supercede those earlier emphasis tropes, such mechanism cannot be used to similar effect today seriously, because doing so requires be wilfully dismissal of the much more that is understood now, and so when such an attempt now *is* made, it no longer presents the perceived truth which was presented when a generation was naive of today's much more consideration.

face it op, you lost.
I haven't attempted to compete. Conversations as Win / Lose is a sociopathic concept.
you like that word, hunh?
Let me tell you now... IT is on the game, it was on the originals and it has a reason for it.

you are either too young... or I am too old

You have never played this game before have you? the line is taken directly from homeworld 2. It occurs when you have just lost hundreds, if not thousands of people on transports as you fight off raiders, all the time while your homeworld is under nuclear bombardment.
For the previous 2 (ish) hours of game you are told over and over the only chance for your people is to get the mother ship fully operational, and then finally you are told "(it) is standing by", and on top of all that is is delivered by Karan S'jet, who is not entirely human after merging with the mothership core.

It is in the release trailer for one reason only, too give everyone who has played the game goosebumps.

By the way, just so you know...calling something 'pretentious' then having absolutely NOTHING to back up that statement does not make IT pretentious, but it does make you

Id imagine "The Mothership... Is standing by" Is to just be used in the trailer. I cant see that being used in the game at all.

I couldn't express concerns about altering the atmosphere of Homeworld otherwise. This thread isn't about the line, just the pause in the delivery. If it's only in the trailer, cool. It probably is.

What does it make someone for that statement to have no relevance to this thread and subject?

Voiceovers in trailers need to be created for the trailer itself. Even some really great voice acting put in a trailer sounds bad.
I heard a barely audible "burp", the Divine cause of the pause. No tinfoil hats needed.
Yes the pause sounds stupid. No it's probably not going to be in the game proper (Not because Gearbox can see it's stupid, but because the timeslot for it being said isn't long enough). No you probably shouldn't have decided to go into in-depth analysis on exactly why you think the one line of dialogue would ruin the entire experience for you.

If you’re worried how well Gearbox are going to respect the project, you could have started out on that point and chosen a few examples (like this bit of dialogue) of how you think they might continue in screwing everything up, so not to make you look quite so pedantic.

(Don't get me wrong, I completely understand your point of view. There's just nothing much that can be done about it now, especially not anything that ranting about it on the internet could accomplish.)
