I can only remember that Hiigarans grew to an empire and there was some big conflict involving the Bentusi, Galactic council and a Hiigaran Flagship (was it Lazarus?). At least the Flagship got one of the cores and was super dangerous.
As I said can't really remember it all, but was more interesting than the story the final HW2 got.
There should be a early E3 footage on youtube ....
Well got it:

So well - at least he's right, the original Homeworld 2 was a bit more ambitious thn what we finally got. But so far I think it's still good what we have to today and will get this month.
^^ ... The E3 stuff shows what could be the possible dimensions of a HW3 in the Future.
I think they scrapped it back then, because the Hardware was not able to handle all the 3D collision detection and path calculations that such complex environments would have required.
Had HW1 not been the bar by which to measure HW2 I very much doubt people would criticise the HW2 story so much. Then again people here seem to really rate Cataclysym, when the story in that was a simplistic derivative of very old sci-fi tropes. (not knocking it - it made for a nailbiting game for sure)
On the other hand, my previous post was plainly critical, in regard to whomever may have put together that 10 minute montage - it's not bad in all honesty but it doesn't end up setting the scene for what is an invidual battle by battle space RTS game, more a kind of 4xStar Ruler esque theme.
And ultimately yes it would be very nice if one day HW3 is made featuring some of those immense and beautiful structures we can see in the trailer above.

and read until Higgarains were exiled to Kharak. Then you should stop reading this and switch to manual of HW1:

when you finish reading HW1 manual (story part) - perfectly - you should finish HW1 game and then switch again to:
http://www.homeworldaccess.net/downl...of_hiigara.pdf
to uderstand what is HW2 all about. After finishing this you should - perfectly - finish HW2 game
And finally you closed the story.
I agree that parts of the homeworld 2 story aren't that great. the 3 core thing being the most obvious to me. I read the orignal homeworld's story documents before playing homeworld 2 and I wasn#t happy with that prophecy and mythology stuff :(
But honestly, I'm pretty ok with that whole invasion plot and the progenitor story. The nicely done videos and the voice acting sold it to me.
The canceled story would have been pretty great aswell, but I'm not sure if it would have been better.
the reason we got the story we did in hw 2 was because sierra scrapped dustwars halfway into production and told them they still had to meet the old deadline.

Homeworld has a great franchise potential ! One can write awesome saga of Higgarians history. It could be as good and as reach as Star Wars. Great plot, great realm, full of beauty the sci-fi literature has.
It has also potential for movie or serial with many seasons.
I hope someone will notice potential this history has and do great art with it.
Honestly, it felt like the writers wanted to come up with their own version of the Force but had to settle for this because there is no indication of any mystical energy field in the Homeworld universe.
Honestly, I hated the whole concept or the fact that Karan S'jet had become immortal and was now made leader of Higara. She was a scientist, not a politician, and I don't see immortality as a reason to make someone a leader.
