What's the campaign like?
I enjoy RTS games more for their campaigns than multiplayer, and I missed this one back in the day. But i'm a huge fan of StarCraft mostly for it's awesome campaign/story i will I enjoy this?

One of the best stories in ''gaming'' imo. I put quotation marks around gaming, but that's because unlike some of the most famous games (last of us, Bioshock, GTA)it's the kind of story that would lose quite a lot of what makes the story as good as it is if ever it were ported to books or the television, no disrespect intended to it. Last of us would probably be improved if it were originally done as a live action movie or series.

It plays like an RTS mainly, but it's full of unforeseeable events and none of them are easy. The campaign is persistent, this means your money in mission one has to be enough to expand your fleet through to two, and three and all the way to the end. This give the campaign a fairly strong roguelike element, because if you screw up and don't take good care of your ships I can promise that you will not see the end of the campaign

Very very good for HW1 story and design wise. You start with a mothership and progress through the campeign with whatever you gathered, built, stole, or lost making the game almost infinitly replayable and it throws some tear jerkers and curveballs at you as the story progresses.

Pretty good for HW2, but it goes for the whole ancient tech is better then modern tech because magic and the romans did everything better then us trope. Also level autobalancing makes a game where your resources and ships carry over level to level becomes less easy to gadge how to best prepare for the next level while "Might makes Right" was an easy decider for HW1, that sometimes means the enemy has more guns then you could ever build in HW2.

HW story, is amazing to old gamers with lots of detail and good gamers.
And as you would expect to more mordern gamers who play there ps4 and xbox 1 and all the new titles, games like this don't interest them, which is sad, as games like homeworld in comparison are alot better

The presentation is quite good.. The story it self is nothing special.. Why people constantly trying to rave that the story is "omg amazing" is quite absurd to me.. As for the actual strategy part of the game.. The game is a joke in the remastered version.. Outside of huge strategical elements being completely broken (tactics and formations), the enemy is absolutely brain dead with larger ships.. The game also throws enormous amounts of resources at you compared to the classic..

You want my advice? If you can get past the dated graphics of the classic version.. Play that.. Because it is the superior strategy game.

The campaign is premised on asymetrical conflict with you taking on the role of the underdogs and is geared toward preparing for the classic ultimate showdown. Since there is also a space exploration element, a couple of the missions are less combat oriented and more encounter-with-the-unexpected driven, but even these tend to have a combat element. Most missions can be won in a variety of ways, but knowing what ships' strengths and weaknesses are will go a long way toward.

What about length? Any idea how long it'll take to playthrough all available campaigns, roughly? It does look nice and sounds quite cool though. I'll probably end up copping anyway.

I've heard people say that each campaign is about 16 hours. I'm getting somewhat close to the end at 8 hours. I'll probably beat Homeworld 1 at a bit under 16, your milage may vary.

I've been throughly enjoying these games, as someone who has very little RTS experience. I've had one mission bug out and I had to restart, but otherwise smooth sailing.

I used to play the original game a little in the evening, then notice the sun coming up.

...yeah. It plays as long as you want it to. I am looking forward to trying the remastered game, but I want to make sure I can play till sunup without any annoying obligations like paperwork.

Sounds like you have the same idea as me my friend, and coincidentally, I have 3 weeks off of university after this coming week. Hence my asking of these questions :p

I think 16 hours to finish the campaign is a little optimistic. Especially never playing it before. I'd say twice that, but worth all the effort.

California heat wave has my geriatric air-cooled system straining a bit, but I've basically been goofing around, feeling nostalgic since I last posted.
