You only need to destroy the asteroids that are heading towards your mothership. If you angle the camera you can see which will hit easily.
As soon as a large asteroid explodes, control-drag over the explosion to target the smaller asteroids or your ships will get hit by them as they spawn.
I also used 3 support frigates, one permanently repairing the mothership, two on the rest of the fleet.
I lost 2 frigates and the mothership got hit twice I think.
I'm glad there is not much micro, I hate micro (aka StarCraft).
My last multiplayer game I focused Ion cannon frigates against the enemies carriers in the back of thier forces and they had no way to renforce mid-fight due to this, My flak frigates against his fighter/bomber groups and he lost the ships types he woulda built from the carrier, and my capital ships against his capital ships to keep the battle from going his way.
I had to redo mission 5 to get through 6 and managed to capture a lot of valuable ships that time around, it was well worth the replay.
