It's not just fighters that are too stupid to stay out of the way, your frigates and corvettes are too. And it's often impossible to tell which asteroids will hit the mothership and which won't unless you pause and look around every 10 seconds. I hate this one so much.
The mothership-killing asteroids also seem to come in pairs or trios, giving you enough time to move the major ones while support frigates can heal the damage caused by asteroids not worth moving.
In the last missions you had the option to capture 2 destroyers (try and capture both), they destroyers are great here with the high firepower but they are slow too. Use assault and ion frigates to clear the way mostly (about 6 each would be good atleast). Don't forget to repair using the support frigates and repair corvetts.
The main problem is when you shoot an asteroid it will break apart into 3 pieces that need to be shot too, the hit box for 1 will cover the other 2 so the ships will not shoot if you dont choose the 1 they can see, pause often and choose the targets :P
Second - send your remaining units somewhere safe - to the right or to the left of the asteroid belt.
Third - prepare a group of frigates and preferably a destroyer (you should capture one in previous mission) and order said group to attack bigger asteroids from the SIDE. This way they won't be threatened that much by rocks and will have good field of fire. Simple as that.
Another word of advice - don't discard assault frigates as obsolete after you got ions. They will come in handy in next missions - let's just say they are much more effective against strikecraft in Remastered edition than they were in the original.
If its stupid hard, reload 5 and get what you need. There simply is NO time to recycle units and make ion frigates with the whopping 10 seconds before crap start flying into you.
wooooooooo bad spelling... need to go get some coffee.. =)
