and just because it says vista as minimum means nothing, dont listen to the fools
The minimum requirements are Windows Vista. This will be due to a number of reasons:
DirectX 10 (Visual/Sound etc)
Stability
Memory management is much better
Device drivers being updated (not many drivers being updated for XP anymore for latest games).
Honestly, XP is 14 years old. It's way past time you upgraded.
As such, it is unlikely for most games to be even tested on XP now and in the future.
As a result, even if it does work it is very possible that you will face glitches. Not just homeworld, but any future game that doesn't list XP as a supported OS.
tl;dr version: I wouldn't bet any money on it working on XP if I was you. At least, not working perfectly.
Win xp is still used, and most important update with security software, browsers and similar. There are new games coming out, but mostly the ones that dont need or utilized graphic a lot (so mostly indie games with lower system req).
But do not buy the game before people that use win xp test it.
If you didn't, then I suggest you turn to those fellas over on those websites where you do those things, you know... But if it works, make sure to buy it, for it'll have FREAKING MULTIPLAYER AND possible patches, which might become necessary...
I'm not condoning illicit activities here, I am just giving a fair counsel on what one should do to buy a game if they are unsure it will run. It saved my ass from buying watchdogs and some other games I don't remember. So, while we fully support the devs for remastering this brilliant masterpiece, the consumer should also take some precautions as to how well he should spend his money; I have repented from buying many things on steam before... So be careful.
If you know how to use your pc and keep it up to date, you will have no problems using win xp as I have been for more than 14 years (but for best possible security, up to date/new OS are the way to go in most cases).
Seriously though...I fear you are probably out of luck with XP. Sorry man!
