I don't think so, as the description starts by saying it works like HW2 - where you pay for research. The speed doesn't change.
Ahh who knows, poor bit of writing. anyones guess is as good as mine.
Reduced costs would make sense. Sometimes, faster research speed was nice, though, if i remember correctly. Your ships in the field were instantly affected by upgrades, right? Was that a thing? Cause fast research would be more benefitial in that case.
Kinda like in civ 5. Pesky civs got you down, rush for cannons. Upgrade your whatever ranged units to cannons and you have a limited time game changer that can make or break you.
In Homeworld 1 and Cata, you had to actually dock ships to refit them with the current research - like faster engines, or new weapons/abilities. In 2 I think research was applied automatically but I can't recall.
In HW1 there were no upgrades, research only unlocked new ships. In campaign, faster research was never necessary. So I'm not sorry to see this mechanic go. In Cata, ships could be upgraded in the field (at least larger ships could), but it took some amount of time, like 20 seconds or whatever. In HW2 upgrades were applied immediately.
Were they configurable? That would be even better if they are.
Kinda need them hotkeys.
