How much of 4X is in these?
I see it in the tags, it gets recommended by people who like 4X games, I try to watch an LP by Blitzkriegsler for it, but all I see is RTS. I can't find a proper review for it on YouTube, TotalBiscuit opens with that you should know Homeworld and he only shows the differences.

So, what is it? What are the 4X aspects?

I like MoO2, Endless Space, GalCiv, Civ, HoMM. Does this have anything in common with these except for "space"? RTS' have a way lower priority for me.

You can also just link a *good* review of this game.

And yes, I already know about the issues of the remastered editions and yes, the HW1 formation non-system is pretty much a deal breaker for me. So, if it has next to zero 4X elements, that's it for me.

Thank you.

It's not a 4X game, period. It's a sci-fi RTS set in 3D space.
Thank you very much. I still wonder why these get mentioned so often then when the discussion is about best space 4Xs. Thanks, guys!
Nowadays, I try to stay out of conversations between fanboys. I could swear that this was a thing.

On, I don't know. I've never seen anyone compare, or call this a 4x game. At least not until now. :rbiggrin:

It could be because the Homeworld series inspired 4X RTS's like SIns of a Solar Empire.
(Large scale fleet combat in a 3D space environment)

So thats perhaps where the comparison comes from.

The Homeworld series is pretty straight RTS, you round up resources, research new toys, and kill stuff, that's about it.

Nope, I disagree. To be a 4x game, you have to include all the ingredients as I've listed in post #1.

"Expand -> None.
Explore -> Not really, but a little.
Exploit -> To a small degree, but don't think of Diplomacy, and things of that nature.
Exterminate -> Oh yeah."

You just simply can't compare this with Sins of a Solar Empire, or even Star Drive. I love both of those, by the way.

Agreed. All-in-all, a one lump sum of it, but it's still fun. :rbiggrin:

I dunno if you missed it or not but he never compared Sins and Homeworld. He merely stated that Homeworld helped inspire Sins, which it did.

No, I didn't miss it. I merely used it as an example as he did. Was it inspired? Who knows? Relating this game to SINS, or putting them in the same sentence, just don't work here. In my opinion. I love both of them, but they are night, and day. I can't see where SINS got anything from this game, or the other way around.

My are we so literate around here today, but it's late, and I'm out of coffee... so be it. :blackcoffee: :rbiggrin:
SotSE has more or less the same combat mechanics, but simplified to fit 4X nature of SotSE. Homeworld created the vision and gameplay base for 3D space RTS games, and SotSE obviously used it for its battles. It would be strange not to.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree. I can't fathom either of these two games being even remotely slightly similar. Don't get me wrong, I love them both.

SINS is all about Building Empires, IE: Colonizing, Diplomacy, Economy, Warefare, etc, etc. Just about none of these are here in HomeWorld. So this is a vast separation of the two as a RTS & 4x game.
Games of different genres can use similar mechanics. Say, Civilization V and Pazer General are different games with extremely similar combat. Baldur's Gate and X-Com (original) have very similar combat, but, again games are of entirely different genres. Or even, hell, older Need for Speed games and Halo (or Unreal Tournament 2004) have not that different driving mechanics. Of course all those games are absolutely different. But certain mechanics are very similar. It's not good or bad. It's a fact. Same to SotSE and HW. SotSE uses combat system and visual depiction of battle that is similar to those of Homeworld. All other comparisons, are, obviously, pointless.

(Also, IMO, SotSE, alas, is a far behind space 4X classics, especially MOO2, the only space 4X I really liked)
