General failure
I'm trying to start HW1 Remastered but every time I try and enter singleplayer the game crashes, and I get a general failure message. From what I've read its caused by mods? But I don't have any downloaded, and I went through the steam workshop files and mod files in HW and manually deleted all of them. idk whats going on, help would be appreciated.

I also can't play HW classic because of a texture bug, so if anyone has a fix for that...

I had this and I've managed to get it working by forcing the game to use an older version of DirectX.

These steps are for Windows 11

- Go to settings
- Select Optional Features
- Next to 'Add an optional feature' select 'View features'
- Install the feature 'Graphics Tools'
- Once installed press 'Windows + R' to bring up the run window
- Type dxcpl and press enter
- In DirectX Properties select the Direct3d 10/11/12 tab
- Click edit list in scope
- Add HomeworldRM.exe to the list it's in your Steam Library folder in this location \steamapps\common\Homeworld\HomeworldRM\bin\Release\HomeworldRM.exe
- Click OK and select the Feature limit 10_1 in the Device settings section

This will force the game to launch using DirectX 10 and solved the problem for me. If you don't have 10_1 available you might need to download DirectX 10 for this to work, or you could try with DirectX 11,

Thank you for going through the trouble of writing down the steps. I have the same issue as OP and unfortunately none of the above has helped. I have gone through each DX version and still get the same error.

I can get in the main menu alright but as soon as I press play, I get the a hard crash to the desktop.

Update. I went and downloaded C++ 2012 as it seems I did not have it installed. I managed to get the game working. However, I still get the same error message randomly. Say I quit the game, then next time I boot it up, same settings, the error message pops up. Nothing's changed in between.

For those using AMD graphics cards, I was able to get the game running again by turning off "AMD SmartAccess Memory" in de AMD software under Performance -> Tuning.

I have yet to see if it will load up consistently, but it has not properly loaded up in a long time. So I have good hopes it will work in the future :)

Problem found - it is Steam - click on steam ->settings->interface and turn off enabled GPU accelerated rendering in web views. You will have to restart steam but afterwards my saved games came right up. I'm running a 6800 xt

So here's what I found to PROPERLY fix it: You need a 3rd party program like Large Address Aware to remind the executables (.exe files) that you have more than 2 Gigabytes of RAM (that was originally the limit when the game first came out on 32bit systems)

All the other solutions here are pointing to this problem, whether people suggest significantly lowering the graphics settings, turning off various settings relating to GPU's RAM access, or playing the "classic" version with settings turned down.

I'm not sure that even booting it in compatibility mode for Windows XP would solve it, since the game wants more RAM than the game can access by default.

Here's where I got Large Address Aware: https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/large-address-aware.112556/

You most likely just need to download the one called LAA_2_0_4.zip

Keep in mind that you'll need to know where to find the .exe files that the launcher uses, which will depend on which drive steam is installed on.
regardless, once you've found the drive, you need to know the rest of the path which will be (however far down the trail your steam folder is installed).../steam/steamapps/common/Homeworld/...(and then you need to go into three(?) different folders to point at the three different .exe files)

Homeworld1Classic/exe/homeworld.exe
Homeworld2Classic/bin/release/Homeworld2.exe
and
HomeworldRM/bin/release/HomeworldRM.exe
I'm not sure where Homeworld Remaster 2's exe is, so it must share a .exe with Homeworld Remaster 1

Thank you very much, friend. Worked here. I have a RX 7900XT and was getting that annoying general failure message. Tried everything in compatibility tab, even those DPI options, Windows XP Service Pack 3 (up to Windows 8) and the game was even opening anymore.

Then I tried this one and bingo, worked as magic, but after my next mission in campaign, before I could begin the next one, the game crashed again, with the same message... pretty strange

Do you know if can I let that smart memory thing turned off or if helps a lot other things? I don't have a clue.

that depends a lot on what games you play. if its "older" games or lets say games like HM:RM then let it off. when you are fine with your fps, dont bother changing. even if yopur fps are lower than you want in other games, try it out and see for your self if its worth it. it can make a difference. there are some tests to find on google/ yt. kinda case by case basis. that was my last knowladge.

Thanks, friend. I'll check it out. What I noticed is that when I turn the smart memory thing off, those old games you've mentioned work fine. For example, I was getting some kind of crash with Age of Mythology and after doing this smart memory thing it didn't happen anymore.

Well, it's enough for me, although this kind of bug pisses me off, because it shouldn't happen. Never had this kind of trouble with NVidia...

Damn it, the general failure error came back, even I'm turning the smart memory option off... any clues? I tried to download the suggested app Hehaho, but seemed too complicated to me :/
