This will force the game to launch using DirectX 10 and solved the problem for me. If you don't have 10_1 available you might need to download DirectX 10 for this to work, or you could try with DirectX 11,
Thank you for going through the trouble of writing down the steps. I have the same issue as OP and unfortunately none of the above has helped. I have gone through each DX version and still get the same error.
I can get in the main menu alright but as soon as I press play, I get the a hard crash to the desktop.
Update. I went and downloaded C++ 2012 as it seems I did not have it installed. I managed to get the game working. However, I still get the same error message randomly. Say I quit the game, then next time I boot it up, same settings, the error message pops up. Nothing's changed in between.
I have yet to see if it will load up consistently, but it has not properly loaded up in a long time. So I have good hopes it will work in the future :)
Genius, this worked for me!
Thx a lot man.
All the other solutions here are pointing to this problem, whether people suggest significantly lowering the graphics settings, turning off various settings relating to GPU's RAM access, or playing the "classic" version with settings turned down.
I'm not sure that even booting it in compatibility mode for Windows XP would solve it, since the game wants more RAM than the game can access by default.
You most likely just need to download the one called LAA_2_0_4.zip
Keep in mind that you'll need to know where to find the .exe files that the launcher uses, which will depend on which drive steam is installed on.
regardless, once you've found the drive, you need to know the rest of the path which will be (however far down the trail your steam folder is installed).../steam/steamapps/common/Homeworld/...(and then you need to go into three(?) different folders to point at the three different .exe files)
Homeworld1Classic/exe/homeworld.exe
Homeworld2Classic/bin/release/Homeworld2.exe
and
HomeworldRM/bin/release/HomeworldRM.exe
I'm not sure where Homeworld Remaster 2's exe is, so it must share a .exe with Homeworld Remaster 1
hi, that does work when i wanna play the games itself, but it doesnt work when i wanna play with mods. then i still get "general failure". i dont have an amd card, so i cant try out what helped the others to bypass and i dont know where to find it the new nvidia app.
maybe you have a clue how to fix it with mods ?
Thank you very much, friend. Worked here. I have a RX 7900XT and was getting that annoying general failure message. Tried everything in compatibility tab, even those DPI options, Windows XP Service Pack 3 (up to Windows 8) and the game was even opening anymore.
Then I tried this one and bingo, worked as magic, but after my next mission in campaign, before I could begin the next one, the game crashed again, with the same message... pretty strange
Do you know if can I let that smart memory thing turned off or if helps a lot other things? I don't have a clue.
Thanks, friend. I'll check it out. What I noticed is that when I turn the smart memory thing off, those old games you've mentioned work fine. For example, I was getting some kind of crash with Age of Mythology and after doing this smart memory thing it didn't happen anymore.
Well, it's enough for me, although this kind of bug pisses me off, because it shouldn't happen. Never had this kind of trouble with NVidia...
