MacOS 10.14 Players: What will happen with HR after Feb 15th?
Hi all

Currently, MacOS users can play HR on the older MacOS 10.14 version (last version to support 32 bit apps). As Google Chrome is no longer supported on these old MacOS versions, and as Steam builds on top of Google Chrome, Steam stops working on these old systems. Thee is a red banner on the my client, reading "Steam will stop running on MacOS 10.14 in 69 days".

What does this mean for MacOS players of the Homeworld Remastered Collection?

Can Mac players expect to be able to run HR after Feb 15th?

What are our options? (Besides buying a PC that, as a side benefit, will also be able to play Homeworld 3?)

PS: Further details are given on the Steam support site:
"As of February 15th, 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and 10.14 (Mojave) operating systems. After that date, existing Steam Client installations on these operating systems will no longer receive updates of any kind including security updates. Steam Support will be unable to offer users technical support for issues related to the old operating systems, and Steam will be unable to guarantee continued functionality of Steam on the unsupported operating system versions.

Unfortunately, macOS 10.14 was the last version to support running 32-bit games on macOS. Apple chose to drop support for 32-bit applications in macOS 10.15 (released 2019), and since many developers have not updated their games to support 64-bit executables, some games will effectively stop functioning on macOS. The Steam store will stop considering games that offer only 32-bit macOS binaries to be Mac compatible at the end of 2023. 98%+ of Steam customers on Mac are already running macOS 10.15 or newer. This means 32-bit only games and applications no longer run on your current operating system.

In order to ensure continued operation of Steam and new 64-bit games purchased through Steam, users on these older versions should update to a more recent version of macOS. We expect the Steam client and games on these older operating systems to continue running for some time. After February 15th, 2024, we will no longer support macOS 10.14 or earlier and we are unable to guarantee continued functionality of 32-bit macOS games after that date.

This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of macOS. In addition, future versions of Steam will require macOS features and security updates only present in macOS 10.15 and above. ..."

Well... I just installed it tonight, and was hoping to play a classic... Yet, it does not start up. I've had success in the past with games that were labeled with the warning about 32-bit support gone... and for reasons that I don't understand, they still play. Not this, which is sad... Wish they could just redo it 64-bit and make it right for fans...

Even Deserts of Kharak, doesn't run, and I loved that game too... Disappointing.

No, both my MacBook Pro, and iMac are of the Intel generation. I could play on my Alienware, but that too is now and oldie. I am not a hardcore gamer, and play little casual games these days, so I have not bothered to keep up with the hardware, as my money is focused elsewhere.

I'm on an Intel running OSX 10.14 and can play both the classics and the remasters due to the OX still able to run 32bit applications.
However, HDoK is a 64bit and should be fine if your OS is only for 64bit applications

I'm running Ventura, so no going back to older MacOS for me. I tried Deserts again, and it does work, so must have had a brain fart. Still wish they'd upgrade the classics... homeworld 3 was a total joke from what I saw via YouTube game play reviews. The least they could do is give the people the games that allowed them to blow the production costs on hw3 that blew chunks as hard as frostpunk 2 lol
