The game and related materials use the term "strike craft" which encompasses both fighters and corvettes - the only real difference between the two being their hull strengths, as far as I know.
So there's presumably no specific mechanic that limits the effectiveness of multi-gun corvettes against other corvettes but they do have more hull than fighters.
The dronefrigate is supposed to be the end-all for fighting vs strikecraft. But the dronefrigate isnt that good actually, especially in the remastered version. The drones have a timed lifespan and will disappear when the timer ticks down. Then you have to wait until the frigate 'recharges' its energy to be able to launch the next batch of drones. On top of that, the dronefrigate has a deceptively short range, so using the DF vs other frigates is a big no since its not designed for that role.
So, my conclusion is this: use multigun corvettes versus ALL fighter craft (regular and corvette class ships). Avoid the Drone frigate (ofcourse, noone is stopping you from experimenting yourself with that danmn thing).
