Any Benefits for owners of the Full version of ROF: Iron Cross Edition?
As I understand it, this is a standalone game, correct? Does this mean that those who purchased the full version of Rise of Flight: The First Great Air War - Iron Cross Edition at full price (before it was made free) recieve no special discount or benefits?

This is not a rant or anything, this is purely a question. I love ROF Iron Cross, but it's still unclear if I should be waiting for an update to my ROF that will eventually make this a free add-on to that game.

The reason I'm unsure is because all the news that I have been reading from the emails sent by 777studios (ROF Studio) has been saying for some time that they would be adding this content to ROF soon. There was no mention of paying additional money for it. There was no mention of this in any of the emails I recieved.

So am I to expect this to be added to my ROF or must I purchase it at full price only for it to be added later for free?

Just a bit confusing because from what I've read it was going to be complimentary to owners of the Full version of ROF.

Thanks for any info

Hi gergorian,

Rise of Flight on Steam is the exact same sim that you already have. The only thing that Steam adds, is a new platform for distribution. Otherwise the titles are identical and fully compatible.

There is a difference in content between your ICE version and the Steam CBE version, though. the CBE version includes a few different planes, and more importantly, the Channel Map. However, you can also unlock these for your existing account by purchasing the planes you want, or the map, on the riseofflight.com store. This will be cheaper for you than to buy the CBE edition.

In other words, there is absolutely no need for you to invest in the Steam version.

If you want to get Steam functionality, what you can do is to add rof.exe to your games list as a non-Steam game. This will allow you to use the Steam overlay while flying, so you can chat and browse during those longer patrols.

I hope that answers your question, if not let me know.

Thanks for the reply. I actually don't own the Steam version, I purchased the full version straight from 777 Studios and feel no need to add it to Steam because it has everything I want the way it is. Although I will definately be getting the channel map in the near future.

Thank you for sorting this out for me.

I'm glad it helped!

Like I said, you can still add your rof.exe file to your games list as a non-Steam game and enjoy the benefit of the Steam overlay while you fly.

The Steam version is really only meant for new customers.

Are the Steam Achievements for RoF:CBE controlled through the Steam Overlay or baked into the CBE proper? That is, if we add our ROF.exe (from RoF:ICE, for example) to our Steam Library as a non-Steam game, thus gaining access to the Steam Overlay, will that unlock the RoF:CBE Steam Achievements for us, or are the Achievements exclusive to purchasers of the CBE on Steam? A limitation similar to requiring CBE buyers to buy add-on content in predetermined packages on the Steam Store.

I think you can only get the achievements if you have the CBE edition.

Still though, the original Rise of Flight is filled with tons of achievements and awards that you can win and display on your main menu screen :) I'm kind of surprised they didn't just copy these as Steam achievements..

As one who neither follows Achievements, Stats or such, I find myself quite content with my orginal (which I purchased WAY back) RoF. But each to there own thoughts.

I am also quite content with my Rise of Flight: Iron Cross Edition and add-ons that I've purchased over the last year and a half+ (after playing the free version for about six months). I was merely curious as to how the Steam Achievements were implemented and what, if any, are the benefits gained through the Steam Overlay by adding ROF.exe to one's Library as a non-Steam game. To date, I've seen no definitive answer as to why one would do so? Pardon my ignorance, but it would be nice to know.

hi saugus, I find the Steam overlay very useful because you can chat with your friends or use the Steam browser while you're flying, without having to alttab out of the sim.

I've heard some people say that the overlay doesn't work with the non-Steam version, though, so I wonder what's up with that. It used to work for me, but perhaps something changed?

Thanks Jorri! I'll give it a try. Does anyone know if it's easy to completely remove a non-Steam game from one's Library (IF it doesn't work)?

Yes, because basically it's just a shortcut. I believe you can just right click and remove it.

Thank you!
