Advice for joystick setup with twist rudder?
I've been using a Gladiator KB for years on several types of flights sims, and typically the twist rudder is way to sensitive, so I sometimes try to put deadbands and non linear curves but I guess this is just a band aid. I don't see myself getting rudder pedals anytime soon, so I'm wondering who here uses this type of joystick and if you can give any advice regarding setup and flying in general.
For the most part I have no issues controlling my plane, take offs, landings, etc... but when in a dog fight, as I'm turning and trying to line up a shot, it seems like my right hand (if I reach for the trigger) tends to turn the rudder, then I over correct, and I am basically causing my gun sight to jump left and right. The plane just seems really touchy. I have tried adding dead bands, and non linear lines, but these seem to cause other issues, because the twist motion is so small that I get nothing then a sudden rapid change (I presume due to the non linear line).. so either way I feel like while I can fly these planes, I can't seem to fight. I got my butt handed to me in the very first training mission and could not beat those two Fokkers :).. I guess I met the Fokkers....
Anyway, other than turning rudder to auto (which I'm not sure is a good idea), I'm looking for advice.
I have no issues practicing and practicing, but this jump rudder seems to not go away.

Some players use a very small center dead-zone to help their aiming accuracy. If you combine a larger dead-zone with aggressive curves you can cause abrupt rudder changes. I'm not familiar with the Gladiator KB control characteristics so, I can't speak with any personal knowledge. From you statements it appears that the Gladiator is hyper-sensitive to movement in other flight sims you have played. I do know from personal experience that curves can be adjusted to greatly slow the reaction time for most controllers but, it does require a great deal of trial, patience & experimentation to obtain the results you desire. I would suggest doing a bit of research on the Rise of Flight forums and others to see if other Gladiator users have posted any profiles for the controller.

As a side-note: I don't recommend using auto-rudder with a joystick that has a twist-handle, auto-rudder is more suited for use with a mouse.

Ok thanks for the advice! Yes I understand now about using those curves. It really made things jumpy near the edges. For now I've put just a small deadband 1-2% and left everything else default.
