Best controller for RoF?
I've been thinking of picking up RoF again, what is the best controller to fly planes with? Somewhere cheap and easy to use.

Like, Can Xbox controllers/ PS2 controllers be used to fly planes in RoF?

yes but you won't get the full effect like you would a joystick

Is it better than mouse and keyboard?

I would say yes a little bit,
I use a Logitech Rumblepad II (obsolete?). I've tried it against a stick and prefer it (imho). It has more buttons than an X-Box controller (which i have tried also), so I can control everything (i use mouse to free look). Rudder can be a problem on certain planes (Dr1) since in battle you have to be free to look around (mouse), but unless you have a full flight sim set-up (peddles/TrackIR), it seems to me (imho again) you are going to have to compromise on one thing or other anyway.

One of the most popular joysticks is Logitech's 3d Extreme Pro. It is relatively inexpensive and works well for beginners thru experienced players. Console controllers should be left connected to the game console and ONLY used on a PC if the game fully supports a gaming controller. Steam shows only partial control of the game with a gamepad on their RoF United store page.

Rise of Flight was originally designed for a joystick with a twist handle. Mouse control was added at about the same time that RoF was made available on Steam. The devs state that a mouse will only provide a rudimentary ability to control an airplane.

With that said, if you are a hardcore gamepad user please take a look here.

Thanks,

Thanks,
Thanks for the response! I'll check that if it's available in my country, I've been really wanting to give RoF a try since I'm a fan of WWI and WWI planes look better than WWII planes in my opinion.

i got the t.16000m fcs flight pack a few months a go and pleased with it greatly. it comes with a stick, throttle and pedals. Uses the same sensor as the thrust master warthog and has little to no dead zone. I bought mine for around 250 usd but idk what your budget is. you can also have the bundle with just the throttle and stick or just the stick. can also buy the other components later if you just buy the stick. I came from the logitech 3d pro and would say this is a big step up to my playing experience. Ive notices a dead zone in my logitech 3d pro so just keep that in mind.

If you dont have a Stick, better use Mouse and keyboard instead of Controller.

I could never enjoy this game until I got TrackIR 5.

I've got an old Thrustmaster Top Gun Fox 2 that seems to work well, except for the throttle control. But, I just put it on yesterday and I'm still learning, so maybe I'm just missing something.

But, the joystick did well.

Rise of Flight is a 2009 game and is not very intuitive (Plug-n-Play) about configuring the many joysticks that are available. You may have to manually setup (bind) the Throttle, Mixture & Radiator controls. All 3 controls are in: Options > Controls > Engine Controls.
Thanks.

I'm thinking of a high-end throttle, but would the WW1 planes actually use that much 'buttons and sliders' to really matter? The build high quality is something else though.

Pretty much depends on your budget and how dedicated you are to flight simulators. The heavy bombers: Felixstowe F.2A, Gotha G.V & Handley Page 0-400 all can use two independent throttles, one for each engine. The Felixstowe & HP400 also have the capacity to control mixture and radiator on each engine. The Ilya Muromets Russian Sikrosky S-22 has four engines and can be controlled by four separate throttles.

I have an aging Logitech G940 system and use every button, switch & slider control in Rise of Flight, In addition I use the VoiceAttack (voice recognition gaming program) to help control other game functions for which I do not have physical buttons.

In my case, and many other flight simmers agree; you can never have too many sliders, buttons & switches. ;-)
